[Solved]Game wont start for me on steam

it opens then couple seconds later closes. err i mean game starts to launch on steam, shows me playing then closes.


Also no download links seem to be working for me on the forum for whatever reason.

Try performing a full file verification using the Steam client, then exiting Steam completely (not just closing the main window) and restarting it. Also make sure that if you have X3TC or X3AP installed, you don't have any mods for either of them installed. Finally, make sure that your antivirus software isn't being overzealous, if necessary by excluding the game folder from its checks.

Regarding the forum downloads, I'm not sure which downloads you mean specifically, but I checked the Downloads page and it's working fine, so any problems will be at your end (overzealous antivirus being a possibility here too). If you mean some other download then you'll need to be a bit more specific.

Again, without a specific example and more information about what exactly you mean by they "don't work", your guess is as good as mine. In general, though, mods are hosted off-site, so if you're having download problems then it's either an issue at your end, or a problem with their hosting. Either way, there's not a lot we can do to help.

PC Firewall software and/or antivirus can be notorious for corrupting game files, blocking downloads, or causing files to not execute properly. Many AV software perform a 'real-time scan' which locks files until the scan of the file is complete. this can cause issues with software timeouts, etc. Sometimes during file scans, they can corrupt a file. Some will even flag a file for quarantine and move it without your consent. Outdated definition files or heuristic algorithms can potentially flag files and immediately block them, even if they are harmless. X3 is very script heavy, and a heuristic algorithm could mistake encoded or plain text script as malicious.

Regarding downloading files, The first steps are to disable firewall software, test it. if that doesn't fix it, disable your AV software. If that doesn't fix it, your browser may have problems. Ultimately, if you are unable to perform these steps, then you may have issues doing any of the more advanced troubleshooting required to identify the problem and may want to consult an expert.

Are you using Google Chrome? If so, it blocks them.

To solve:

Right click the download link, select "save link as" and choose the appropriate directory. After doing that, it will pop up a message on the downloads bar stating "this file cannot be downloaded securely" with a "Discard" button. If you click "Discard", it will cancel the download. Click the arrow and choose "Keep" instead, and it will download it properly.

I had the same issue with the game not starting a while back. It's because I uninstalled TC while keeping FL installed, which wiped out most of the files FL needed to run. Verifying the cache as CBJ suggested fixes it, because it makes Steam notice that the files aren't there.

Edit: It was TC I uninstalled. AP would probably have caused the same issues though.
