Transfer wares to docked ship never completes - One fix in a future build + this case workaround.

X4 v4.00 (434806) with both expansions and no mods.

1. Personally dock a smaller ship on a larger ship, where the smaller ship has no captain, but the larger ship does, and both are owned by you.
2. Note that "Transfer Wares" in the dock interactions menu is disabled.
3. Select the larger ship in the map.
4. Right click on the docked ship and select "Transfer Wares" from the context menu.
5. Transfer a satellite to or from the docked ship.
6. Both ships end up with a "Ware Exchange" order that never completes.
7. Undock.
8. Immediately dock again.
9. "Waiting for trade to finish" message appears.
10. Ware exchange completes successfully.

The problem of course is step 6. Presumably this is due to the docked ship having no captain, since there is no problem when trying this with AI-piloted ships.

I would expect the exchange to work, but the fact that the "Transfer Wares" button is disabled makes it look like there might be some intentional attempt to prevent this for some reason.

I can provide a savegame exhibiting the problem if required, but it seems like it should be easy to reproduce.

There goes my plan to use unmanned docked ships to smuggle spacedope...

In that save, I have docked a ship and initiated a transfer which is just sitting in the order queue. In this case it's an aux ship, but I also tried docking on destroyers and L miners and the same thing happens.

Thanks for the save - we've confirmed the issue with your described repro-steps and should have a fix for that in an upcoming build.
Until then as you discovered the workaround is to undock and re-dock your ship.

Any word on that fix? I've come back to the game after a couple of years and am still having to use the same workaround to transfer wares.

@ reeper: Given how old this thread is and the game version changes since, it would be best to start a new thread with repro steps from a linked vanilla save showing the issue.
