[lore question] energy based missiles

I am making a mod and I need to know whether energy based 'missiles' are viable in X lore. I want to make a weapon that shoots projectiles that track a target, but are similar to plasma bolts in appearance. Would a weapon like that make sense in X lore?
Also, is it even possible to make a missile weapon that does not use ammo?

i do not recall energy-based guided weapons in X lore.
But its doable, just use projectile mesh for missile.
As for not using ammo - not sure really if missile will work like that, never tested.
