Mass Drive: when do you use it?

So what's the deal with the Mass Drive? Are they useful for something beside throwing away Cr? I find them completely useless but maybe I'm not using them correctly. I tried them on a Nemesis. I was not able to kill 2 small Xenon fighters that I would have melted with Thermal Disintegrators. They overheat after 2 shots and require forever to cool down. I was not even able to aim properly.
Really, what is the use case here? Have 2 ships, one with and one without, shoot once with the first and teleport to the other? I really don't get them at all .

I thought they might be valid for taking out capship surface elements if you would be able to target them from the distace.

They were awesome for this in XR, in a different form, of course.

I see no point in using them due to the insane cool-down. They'd only be useful for swarming cap ships with S ships where cool-down isn't as much of an issue but considering they cost a few million you may as well just buy more destroyers.

they were waaaaaaay overpowered in an early beta. Their heat is out of control right now, but it wont take much of a buff for them to be strong again. They are potentially problem weapons owing to their good range and hitscan nature.

They are good for disabling capitals from far, but at difference of all of the other main guns, the mass drivers aren't semi-turreted, so you need to steer the ship to aim them.
