That looks absolutely awesome. I can feel the frames falling by the second. As if there weren't enough frame issues with the game already, I'll definitely be downloading this when it's ready.
The good part about this is that in over 90% the graphics card is not the bottleneck but the CPU.
So in most cases you wont notice any performance hits because these effects dont need anything to be calculated by the CPU but only the GPU. In big asteroid fields it might be a bit different because there the graphics card can be lowering your fps, but normally you wont fight big fleet battles in big asteroid fields (because of pathfinding and so) anyway.

Can you control how the explosions happen? I thought a bit of variety in them would be cool. Eg, it would be epic is sometimes theres a 'critical explosion' that causes a ship to do the large blue explosion the instant it dies.
I made many explosion effects random already. WIll try to make them even more diverse but its a lot "change some lines, load a game, check the effect by destroying several ships, quit game and repeat" which takes a lot of time
