CTD Unplayable

Post by GrandesKohonas »

Hi.
As the title hinted at, the game has taken to CTD at an increasing rate, making the game unplayable.

V: 2.60 English
Game has bin modded but they have since all bin removed and game files verified (Steam). Still CTD.
Crashes occurred before modding. and do so still after.
Game was played from the start.

This happens all the time.
Since install there have bin rare ocuring CTD's(Once every 5 hours or so)
But recently, the game runs for less than 5 mins before crashing.
There is no warning, just crash.

I have since installed the most recent Gfx drivers. and removed all mods. No effect.
Where appropriate, additional symptoms, error messages, links to screenshots and crash dump files (see this FAQ entry).
Your system specifications in the form of a DxDiag report and vulkaninfo (see this FAQ entry).

No Dump file was to be found in the gamedir.

You have 4 different *sound* devices and drivers (Nvidia, Microsoft, Arctic and USB) on the go at the same time. Two of the sound drivers are well out of date and you have a generic Microsoft sound driver for your onboard Realtek sound chipset. Disable whatever sound devices and drivers you do not use in Control Panel, Device Manager, Sound/Audio Devices (right-click on a device in the list and a disable/enable device+driver pop-up will come up).

Whatever sound devices you keep, make sure the drivers are fully updated and are from the device manufacturer (Realtek here).

Good luck.

Thanks for trying.

I did as you asked.
Disabled all but the one I was using.
Updated the drivers (Realtek & Arctic)
btw, that download page for realtek is horribly slow.

Rebooted.
Retried.
3 min CTD.
Tried an older save
5 min CTD.
Then Tried an even older save.
2 min CTD.

I cannot see any obvious reason for the CTDs in the DxDiag but we have no dump or error reports to go on.

With Win8/10 error reports appear in the DxDiag but with Win7 you have have to go looking for them.

Dump files (.dmp) would be listed in timed pairs at the end of this folder: Drive:\Steam\steamapps\common\X4 Foundations and with names similar to X4_r250_2019_09_23_17_47_28.dmp.

The GTX 970 is notorious for its strange memory architecture. Specifically it is 3.5 GB + 0.5 GB of dedicated video memory. It seems like 1 GB of this (0.5 GB from each which shared the same cache) is disabled for DirectX. However in Vulkan it appears the whole lot (~4 GiB) is being reported as available. I wonder if this is causing X4 issues when it tries to use more than 3GB of video memory. Try lowering game graphic settings to low and seeing if it alters how frequently the crash to desktop occurs.

Crashes to desktop can also be caused by malfunctioning hardware. Run a general check that your hardware is working reliably. Such as a GPU stress test like Furmark.

If your save was unmodified (no mods installed) then you could post it here to look at. If others can recreate the crash to desktop on 3.00 B8 then Egosoft can work on debugging it and fixing the cause of the crash.

Otherwise if mods were used then chances are one of them was the cause.

There really is no need to Quote the message you are directly replying to.
Also, please stop replying all to company wide emails ;)

It was modded, but the mods were removed, and the crashes continued.

This can be the cause then. Removing mods does not mean that all the data they created or modified gets removed or restored in such a way that the game knows how to cope with it afterwards.

As imperial and many devs say, just cause you remove the extensions folder doesn't mean it disabled them. Once a mod is used, the game is never going back to stock. Also, that amount of hours in a single save is miniscule. I have a save with over 700 rl hours (none spent afk) on it.

Hours are cumulative in a save, so each save shows how many total hours you've played that game start up to that point. So not really so crazy since Rastuasi could be using all the save slots. (Although I agree with the 'crazy' if it's only a single save slot  All those eggs in a single basket. WHEW! :o )
Have a great idea for the current or a future game? You can post it in the [L3+] Ideas forum.

Actually overall I have 5 games (different versions of game, different mods or lack of mods) with around 2000 total hours, but each game has a single save outside the automated saves the game does. So technically my one save is 700+ as a file.

Discussion here has gone well off topic now and the OP hasn't been able to provide save, error messages or dmp files so I'll close this thread.

If the OP manages to find more information then please either start a new thread or PM myself to unlock this one.
