[3.0] New weapon sounds for destroyers?

Was trying to figure out how to mod weapon sounds so that I could give the destroyer cannons the "shotgun" treatment as a first step in attempting to make L/XL combat less boring. Seems egosoft beat me to it?

By default, the destroyer cannons use the same sound entry as S pulse laser which sort of explains why they aren't very satisfying to use. 🤔 But as it turns out, there is now an entry in the sound library for an "L ship laser" (wpn_impulse_l). It is currently unused and I assume it was added in the 3.0 beta. I made a small patch and took it for a spin. It makes a marked difference. I've made a video to showcase, first clip is vanilla, second clip is the new sound patched in, third clip is a sound mod because I don't know restraint. :)

As with everything else in 3.0, it should probably be considered work in progress and possibly completely unrelated to current destroyer cannons. I do hope it's for the destroyer cannons though as good sound design is extremely important to the feel of combat. I was originally going to make a feedback/discussion thread on the topic of sound (hence the mod I made) as I feel it's a big reason behind a lot of the critique people level at the combat, but as weapons seem to be getting a serious second pass for 3.0 I'll hold off until that has been released.

Totally agree, new sounds they are making will create much better feel of the gun.
I also changed those sounds in VRO, and waiting for them to finalize new sound effect to use it in new gun.

The left cannon sounds like missiles from Freelancer :D

And I too agree with the sound design being essential for the general feel of the game. The updated effects already are a huge improvement in 3.0

I really like the second sound (wpn_impulse_l), not sure about the high pitch muzzle/attack effect though, and think it might sound better if thats toned down to concentrate the attention on the "wAoow" noise.
