X4 with Wiimote

Post by Stoats not Goats »

Fairly self explanatory, X4 is fun awesome with a Wii remote (despite the wii remotes limited array of buttons) :) and is incredibly enjoyable to use the motion sensor to control yaw and pitch of small fighters. Kudos to the versatility of the wii remote and egosoft's great controller support :D .

I'd like to try that too. :D How did you do that?

I tried this myself and opted for a combination of the steam controller’s superior motion and buttons with the Edtracker. Wiimote is a cool idea that’s cheaper for many, though.

Thanks for the replies guys :D . Luckily the process was quite simple for a non tech-savy person like myself and i followed the following steps (this is for windows btw, it does work on Linux but I'm not familiar with it):

1. Download and install the HID wiimote drivers from https://www.julianloehr.de/educational- ... d-wiimote/ (this is what enables the wiimote to be read as a game controller and not simply an input device).
2. Open the HID wiimote control centre (I don't know if it has to be open to work but I have it open just in case)
2. Go to windows control centre and search for bluetooth and select 'add bluetooth device' whilst simultaneously pressing the 1 and 2 buttons which must be held until your computer has found the device. (if you try adding a bluetooth device out of the control centre it requires a PIN where in control centre it only asks for one)
3. The device should appear as "Nintendo RVL-CNT-01" click next
4. A prompt should appear asking for a PIN, don't enter anything and click next
5. A further prompt should appear saying that it is installing packages for the device (if this doesn't work repeat steps 2-4 until it does as sometimes the wiimote or computer times out)
6. Start steam and open "big-picture mode", it should detect the wiimote as a game controller.
7. Go to "big-picture" settings and select "controller settings" where you will be able to set up the device layout.
8. Unfortunately steam doesn't support the wiimote as a device so you will have to set it up as the default xbox one controller, luckily however it works the same for the most part but you have to work out which buttons do what through trial and error as some buttons and fuctions on the wiimote can't be mapped and remapped in game (like the B button and motion controls) and must be set up in steam beforehand.

If any of this is unclear please let me know, I've never tried writing anything like this especially with something I'm still figuring out but I hope you guys who are most assuredly more tech-savvy than I will be able to figure it all out. :P

Wow, thanks for the detailed writeup! I wanted to try it out but I lost my bluetooth connection dongle so no WiiMote X4 experiments for me :(

But I'm still curious does the "pointing" feature of the WiiMote also work? I mean does the ship fly in the direction where you point (using the IRMouseDriver perhaps)?

Wii Remote uses Bluetooth to communicate so requires the computer have appropriate hardware to communicate via Bluetooth. Additionally not all Bluetooth hardware will be able to properly use the Wii Remote.

Currently the only Bluetooth hardware that is known to work 100% correctly and reliably with the Wii Remote is the official Nintendo Wii/WiiU Bluetooth adapter that is built into the appropriate consoles. Most others allow most of the functionality but may have issues with some edge cases due to different data rates or buggy Bluetooth stack implementations. Some cheap Bluetooth dongles might outright not work.

This is mostly a concern with emulation. For proper Wii emulation one has to low level passthrough the Bluetooth adapter to the emulator. This is where the differences in performance and stack implementation can manifest as bugs. However some cheaper Bluetooth dongles may still not provide enough bandwidth for proper (like Wii) motion detection.

The motion controls in the Wii remote are bad by modern standards. They suffer from very bad motion drift during use. One of the main reasons the Wii had the light bar was to allow it to dynamically recalibrate during play so as to remain meaningful. Even with the motion+ added which vastly improved its motion tracking capabilities, it still pales compared with the motion tracking in the average modern smartphone, which due to touch screen is also a lot more customizable. The only advantage they have over modern smart phones is their low price and being near indestructible.

To add to what Imperial good says above in regards to which bluetooth dongles support the wiimotes, I myself utilise a "Targus Bluetooth® 4.0 Dual mode Micro USB Adapter" (Just because it's the only one sold in the area where I live :P) so if anyone was struggling with existing bluetooth dongles, this is one that I know for sure works :D.

And ZombiePotatoSalad, that's not a bad idea, I'll have to give that a go
