AI Fighters Not Nimble Enough?

Hey all, I didn't know what to exactly to title this but I have noticed a frustrating problem with the game right now and was wondering if anyone else noticed it.

Before I get to that I am going to give a little context of the situation. I claimed Heritic's End as my own sector and I am currently building a shipyard there. Protecting it is an auxiliary ship, a destroyer and 3 small wings of fighters. Heritic's End is a rather large sector and it is home to a pirate base and a disgusting amount of Xenon/Kha'ak, so naturally there is a lot of combat going on. I managed to quell the initial surge and because of that some of my traders from other stations move into the sector. Some of these traders have valuables that pirate want and they get harassed. I get the notification and dispatch a squad of interceptors to handle the situation but I they all drop out of boost mode ~25km away from the pirate, which gives the pirate time to destroy my trader and take off.

I was wondering if everyone had this issue or if it is a pilot experience thing (they are just over 3 stars)

I think similar behaviour is being reported in the Public beta forum such as here and this is not really considered a new issue to the beta either.
