Capital ship beam weapon

Post by LeVaAl »

Why they exist? is there any use for that weapon? you CANT kill any capital ship using beam weaponry. Maybe I don't see or don't know something? it's damn weak.... and "newer use" option.
What I'm getting wrong?

You’re not supposed to kill capital ships with beam weapons. Those are for fighter defense. For capships, use Plasma and destroyer main battery.

Sadly, beams struggle to track fast moving fighters, so they're actually better against medium size ships, but even then pulse turrets are more versatile because they are fast enough to hit everything, can leader their targets, and are probably about as powerful, if not moreso.

The idea of beams isn't bad but they are one of the worst weapons unfortunately. They'd probably work a lot better if they had a little bit of lead to compensate for the turrets having limited tracking speed.

For capital ships that might be, but my I have a few Nemesis' with 5x mk2 beams and they melt fighters like butter. Also quite fun to watch :)

L beam turrets do for some reason have a mad damage output that can damage capships and melt fighters, but the M variant is better left off your hardpoint.

with new shield regen, beams in all sizes can't do anything

It could be a anti fighter destroyer but needs a better AI then
Fixed ships getting spawned away from ship configuration menu at resupply ships from automatically getting deployables.

It's best to use pulse in any slot, I think. Especially for anti-fighter. I've genuinely never found beams to work better than pulse turrets. The M ones might work I guess? But pulse turrets are super reliable and effective, so I only use either those or plasma turrets for anti-capital work.

I will say the new flak turrets have good firepower too, so they make a good medium slot, but currently they're not very good against fighters, weirdly. They do make short work of M size ships though.

And tey SO SHORT range...
actually I don't get why all weapons so short-ranged...:(

Mainly because the turrets work as a twin linked, shorter ranged version of the same weapon, but 1 size smaller. There are no "true" L sized turrets to speak of, since they are just a pair of M sized weapons with much lower range that are then slapped on a turret platform.

Which work; if you're only ever using the turrets on Gunboats to ward off fighters and have no intention of ever using anything larger than those or using turrets for any other purpose.

Beams are also problematic on l turrets, since scaling them on a turret would make them obliterate S ships. They could be used as the main weapons though, if we threw out the worthless "main" batteries.

And I don't think this approach to large turrets is correct. I mean they are 3 times larger in size...

Damn, I'd love to see something like beams from Freespace 2 some day in X4.

3.0 Gave us Freespace 2 flak, so maybe I can dream for FS2 beams?

That also reminds me we need L and XL size lasertowers (like Mjolnir sentry beam from FS2) :)

Freespace 2 set the golden standard how beam weapons, flak weapons and missiles should behave and how their impact should feel like in a space game. :)
