Different controls for new ship

Post by Cpt. Ammogeddon »

I have built my first new ship at a wharf, but now the controls for roll and yaw seem to be switched. (I play on a Joystick)

Everything else seems to be fine and work as it should, but those two axis are switched. Is this a bug? Or am I missing an option in the menu?

Controls stay the same upon switching ships. Did you maybe changed the flight model by accident? (STRG-<space> & the like - check the key bindings for more details).

There's a setting called "adaptive steering" or such. If it's on, then the X axis action will switch to roll or yaw depending on which thrusters are stronger on a given ship (i.e. compare roll and yaw degrees per second in the Ship Overview). If you don't like it you can either turn that setting off, or go into controls and map X axis explicitly to yaw/roll instead of "secondary steering" or whatever it's called.

For X4 Foundations, I have the same exact issue. Starting ship and Nemesis Corvette ships both use identical X axis and Z axis mapping on my hotas. Then, when switching to either a space suit or the Zeus Carrier, the mapping to X and Z axis are inverted with each other. I have to go into the game settings to change this so it works correctly. Really breaks immersion of the game when I have to do this. I'm going to see if I can create an alternate profile for this so I'm not constantly changing game settings.

Definitely seems like a bug to me.

@ DerCommissar: As radcapricorn said in the post above yours, if you toggle adaptive steering or set up explicit axis controls in a profile then your issue should not happen.

Not a bug, it's a setting feature called adaptive steering. It makes your yaw become the slower thruster and main steering the faster. Turn off adaptive steering to keep them as you set them.

@DerCommissar: The above suggestions will only solve your problem if you set up a hotkey to switch between the two modes. The reason is that it depends on the thruster you're using - All Around or Combat. They each use a different mode. I've found that most combat ships you capture (not all) will have the Combat Thruster installed, so if you normally use the All Around one, your roll and yaw will be reversed when going from one ship to the other. Personally, I find it a bit annoying, but I've learned to live with it by setting up a hotkey to switch between the two.
