Strange Steam network traffic

Post by RegisterMe »

I save my game, exit X4, and then go to relaunch (to see if I can get a ship that's stuck undocking unstuck). I can't launch the game because there's some kind of network traffic going on with Steam, at only 825KB/s when normally I get 4.5 megabits / second.

There's no game update taking place - is it synching with the cloud (in which case can I turn it off)? Is it something to do with venture states?

It takes minutes to complete, and it's annoying :(.

I'm also getting some kind of sync after exiting, though in my case it's blazing fast. Likely some Steam silliness going on.

I think it is syncing save games. Save games are synced to the Steam cloud with X4.

Do you have cloud backup/synch enabled for Steam Games generally (Steam, Settings, Cloud) and/or for X4 specifically (X4, Properties, Updates)?

Yes, generally. It might be a combination of cloud saves and me only noticing it when I save, exit, and immediately want to reload the game (ie if it happens in the background when I just keep playing I never notice it). I'm surprised by how low the data rate is though.

Since this is syncing the save game files on your PC to the steam cloud, It's taking your Upload speed into account rather than your download speed.

You get 4.5 Mb when you download games/updates/etc, but more than likely not when you upload to steam.

I have a 10 Mb Upload, and I still see around the same speed as you when uploading. I'm quite sure this is a Steam upload limit throttled by Steam because each file uploaded probably goes through virus scanning and hash/error checking, etc. Therefore, this speed has nothing to do with X4 or Egosoft.

Yeah I think you're all right, it's the save synching to the cloud. The only reason I notice it is because I am doing a "save, exit game, launch game, load game" operation. When it happens in the background I don't notice it.
