Ships getting stuck trying to land on Nomad

Post by Scoob »

Hey all,

So, I'm having problems with my Nomad Support ship... I've just ordered my small fleet of fighters to dock at it, but I'm constantly having ships getting stuck. Ship landings have always been wonky, but it's like they're trolling me currently. The ships wobble their way to just over the landing pad - they are literally no more than 10 metres from docking - and they then just sit there. Eventually, other ships in the queue with dock orders start failing "Order could not be completed" they stop trying.

Sometimes, wobbling the Nomad about - throttling up / down, yawing and strafing up and down can wake the docking ships up, and they proceed to dock, but it's not guaranteed.

I do not have a save for this as my game is modded, but docking is 100% a vanilla process so I'm convinced it's not a mod issue. Also, ship docking has been ropey since launch. Thing had improved, to a degree, but this current behaviour is a bit of a regression...well, maybe not regression as such, as I've never had ship stuck so close to managing to actually dock before. Very very frustrating.

Is anyone else seeing this? I'm not doing anything special, just ordering a group of ships to dock and the game can't handle it. I might have to leave the Sector in another ship and hope the games simpler OOS mechanics sort the issue out.

I really hope 3.0 contains a lot of refinements to just critical core game functions, as life will be a lot more pleasant then.

I haven't tried the Nomad myself, but it does sound like the general ship on ship docking problem. The same indecisive wobbling happens to my ships and drones when docking on Behemoth, or sometimes even boarding pods during a boarding op. And it's situational. Sometimes they dock/land just fine, other times having issues.

I certainly observe issues on different docks, I don't think it's specifically an issue on the Nomad in general. However this stuck issue is unique to the Nomad so far. I've been playing for over an hour this evening, perhaps nearer and hour and a half, and during that time (some of it in SETA) I've still not been able to get 20 or so Fighters to dock. I cannot jump to another ship as the docking bays are blocked by the stuck ships, instead I'm having to use the spacesuit to fly to my nearest ship. NOT how I planned to spend the evening!

It's weird really, as docking at my station seems to largely be working quite well - though that's mostly M-Class ship traffic. This is the first time I've played around with larger groups of S-Class ships, and it's pretty broken sadly - at least when it comes to the Nomad. Very very frustrating!

Edit: As hoped, leaving the Sector saw all ship dock near instantly...what a pain to make it happen though.

Thought: As docking is such a very basic feature of the game, the devs must surely be aware of how wonky it is. I know it will improve, I've been around since '99 so I know how X-Game development proceeds at its won pace, however I really hope things improve further for 3.0.

Edit 2: I also wonder why ships so often approach from underneath another ship. All docking ports are on the TOP of every ship, so why this weird behaviour? All it does is make it more difficult for the AI to navigate to the dock. Ships often end up clipping through the target ship or bouncing off it and spinning away, before finally trying again. This game is good, but such happening really take me out of the game. Out of a two hour+ play session this evening, ALL of it has been trying to work around this issue.
