Do people have the music on or?

Post by dholmstr »

I've still not getting as much music from the game that I tought I would. Back in the old X games I sometimes just started the game and went to a certain sector to get that music in THAT sector while fiddling with my empire. While I don't need that to be the case for X4 , I'm still not getting enough music played. Just that damn boring ambient. It does indeed play way more than it played back at launch, but get cut off for reasons I don't know. Do others get this? I mean I'm sitting still at a point of nowhere close nor any reds within 100km so the combat music shouldn't start. Still the music that just started, plays for a very short time and just out of the blue the game decides "naah more ambient".

Is a known problem, have the same. There is a good mod (Legacy Music) that I can recommend if the **Modified** doesn't deter you. It not only fixes the problem partially, but also brings, if desired, collections of old parts AND sector specific music. I don't have the link right now, but on Nexus it can be found quickly.

ps: a work around is to travel (in travel mode) as, if you just 'sit around' the music stop playing.

I'm still playing with the music on, but I'm getting a bit bored with the on/off combat music too. Not that it's a bad piece of soundtrack, but just because it's getting pretty annoying to have it cutting in everytime you are near a randomly generated xenon N. The game has plenty of awesome soundtracks that deserves not to be interrupted.

So I'll eventually just switch it off and put my own playlist in background.

Hell, I may very well try and get my hand on the X-serie soundtracks and add them to that playlist. That way I'll be able to enjoy the tracks to the end.

This means that at one point you were nothing but an asshole.

I'm using the 'no rondom encounters' mod... It's a peace of heaven :)

But yea, without mods the best way, as it is, use de OIS in the background.

I play with the music on, I dont get how people can play any game with other music on, unless its some mindless grind game or something.

And I too love how music in the old games helped define a sector - Im currently playing X3AP with the XTC mod and im finding myself pick sectors again for the music and backdrops, not just how many asteroids are there and other stuff. Its much more satisfying. The move in Rebirth to random sector music is good in some ways and bad in others, i think some middle ground needs to be found.

Firstly I think they should make combat music only come on if someone is actively hostile to you (I think a new new UI colour is required for 'enemy' but not hostile ships, orange. Red just for someone who is actually going to attack you).
Secondly I think specific dev-chosen regions of certain sectors (not sectors as a whole), and especially certain regions of core sectors should have a defined track that never changes.

Music, what music? There is a nice piece at start up then the rest is just short snippets. There are some quiet mood bits that are in some sectors but you have to turn your volume right up to hear it.
The missing music is such a shame as it was so good in the old games. Who ever decided to drop the music needs a fog horn in there ear. ( Bring back our music )

I play with the sound of now as the stupid short bit ( same in all sectors ) starts then suddenly stops for no reason. Then that dumb red warning music is awful. So for the game to be usable I turn the sound off completely. This also stops that fool who keep’s requesting assistance, and those stupid pirate remarks. Goodness ES what were you thinking?????

The way music is presented is a bit unorthodox for an X game but it does make sense. Their playback is situational -
different parts of a sector trigger different songs:

-Cluster specific tracks (these are the original X4 pieces and are triggered by specific clusters instead of zones)
-City zone tracks/legacy songs (these are triggered when you are in a zone - basically next to stations)
-Field tracks (these are the ambient tracks that consists of random notes and sounds, quite underwhelming shamely)
-Travel/deep space legacy songs (triggered when you are flying through empty space)
-Prebattle themes (played solely if there are enemies nearby)
-Battle tracks (played when your ship is engaged in a fight)

In my opinion this is problematic for a few reasons:
-We are used to identifying a sector with its very own track (thanks to X2-X3)
-The better songs (legacy tracks from Rebirth) can be encountered relatively rarely
-And on top of that the legacy tracks are implemented to be quieter by design
-And the prebattle themes easily become irritating for their short loop and continuous playback.

@Nort: most of the tracks are implemented from Rebirth. As for previous tracks, I'm sure there were some licensing issues with Thomas Egeskov Petersen and Daniel Finney. Cut some flipping slack for Egosoft.

The music does not come on nearly frequently enough in vanilla. I used the Legacy Music mod for a while, and No Combat Music, and it was awesome. But, I am playing vanilla for now. In a little bit though I think I will start going modded again, I miss the music too much. I'll keep a vanilla save file so I can go back to vanilla if I want at some point later.

Every game I have in my Steam Library is Music off! Much prefer to hear the game sound without the music, just my preference.

To answer the title:

I have the music off. In fact I do this with all my games. You miss a lot of the actual in-world sounds with music on. Also, I don`t like being warned of danger I haven`t seen or heard naturally yet; makes battles much more engaging.

So whatever issue you have with X4`s music I haven`t noticed.
1. Please do more on NPC civilian/uniform variety, and bio customisations, Devs.
2. Stations need sirens/warnings when enemy is close in numbers or Station in danger of destruction (in Sandbox).
Yes, for immersion. Thankyou ahead of time. (Edit: This is actually happening!!!)

Indeed my title was badly worded, but the discussion here was more about how the music plays. Giving an answer only about the title and a short "I don't use this, no problem" is a bit pointless wouldn't you agree?

Should`ve worded your title better, rather than title-baiting us.

Music themes (like the X3 themes) seem to trigger around stations. However, 90% of the time I'm hearing ambience tracks when drifting too far from a station or combat tracks whenever a random enemy warps in.

I agree, it's very disappointing in the current state. I prefer the way it works in Rebirth, big recognizable sectors each which their own track list.

Actually, the tracks taken from X3 are strictly used when traveling. The tracks include Drums of the Goner (previously X3's Getsu Fune sector's theme), Yet to be discovered (previously X3R's Home of Light sector theme), Orbital Surfer + Aurora (previously X2-X3R's menu theme), Taming Stars, Tranquil Light.

The rest are indeed triggered in populated zones. Those tracks originate from X-Rebirth, Rebirth Home of Light DLC, and Rebirth Teladi Outpost DLC.
