Change Camera-Level in Build-Screen

Post by Retrox »

Is it possible to change the "level" the camera is on in the building screen? Somehow, its always fixed to the center of the station, so its hard to build multy-level-stations. Has anyone a solution for this?
Intel i7 8700, Gtx 1070, 16gb RAM. I think i'm ready for X4. Bring it on, Egosoft! [edit 2025: this signature didnt age well  ]

You can refocus the centre by selecting a placed module
the pan/rotation then uses that module as it's centre of reference

or you can just move your POV by using mouse controls to move where the cursor is

both work for me

Both only work on the horizontal pane. You can't change the vertical level of the center of reference. (Unless it's been patched recently.)

I also had issues with multi-layered complexes because of that.

Actually you can change vertical level of the center of reference. I need to confirm this 100% when I get home, but when you move vertically with the W S (or with Up Down arrows), the new structures are also created at that level.
In that way I was able to vertically position 2 E piers one below each other (in a distance from each other and without connection), without problems.

But you can't change vertical position of camera :)

I wasn't aware W/S were working for module elevation, so thanks for that tip. You can also set your camera so you see your station from the side, then your modules will pan vertically instead of horizontally, and allow for precise movements.

It does not affect the camera's POV, though.

As the OP said, it's a PITA when you're trying to adjust stuff between 2 layers of a multi-layered compound.

Plus, if you buy a non-centered plot, (say if +Y = 5 ans -Y = 1), your camera will always be centered to Y = 0. This means in this example your POV's reference will always be at 1/6 or elevation of the whole plot. For a Y = 6 Km plot, it's manageable. For a Y = 15 Km plot, not so much.

I understand there are other priorities, and that there are ways to work along with the problem. I'm just pointing it out.
