Thanks for TrackIr capability. Appreciated. 2.22 and...

Post by Socratatus »

1.Thanks for Trackir capability at last- The game is instantly more immersive now. While taking off I can view my sides and look up, especially when I hear something going on (like some kind of combat nearby). I can now leave a Station and view the large Station sliding by, then back to my main view, all effortlessly and naturally. :)

A suggestion, please let us look a little further behind us in the seat so we can look more inside the cockpit area (sort of leaning and looking hard left/right).

2.Thanks for allowing us to re-enable the Right Mouse button key (in options) for those of us who like to use it to run etc. :)

I still saw a black woman with different coloured arms to her head though. :|

You`re getting there.

Yes, for immersion. Thankyou ahead of time. (Edit: This is actually happening!!!)

I join in the gratitude for the TrackIR support, tested yesterday with my EDTracker and worked wonderfully from the get-go, it does wonders for immersion. Also looking around the map now gives a "whoa" effect just short of a full VR experience.  A pity I have to turn off tracking while in menus to be able to click on stuff without missing four times out of three. :D

The only thing I currently have issues with (totally subjective mind you) is having tracking disabled when walking around platforms or ships. Once I'm mentally switched to "move your head around" mode I find quite hard to suddenly swap back to a "fixed head" mode having to look around via mouse, and then continuously having to do back and forth between looking around with the head or with the mouse. I invariably end up trying to look around even while walking around, and the discordance between what my brain expects to do and what the head in the game actually does gets quite discomforting, it's like a very (very) mild case of motion sickness as it happens with forced head animations in VR.

If there aren't technical limitations to having head tracking always enabled, or some kind of toggle for it from the game options eventually, I'd very much prefer to have it always on than as it is now.

Since I can't currently test it, a question for those already using TrackIR...

Custom Game profile possible? Or is it detected as the Default?

Detected as default, you should see the tracker recognized in the controllers list in the options, if the tracker is on and ready just start the game and it will be working already. There are no in-game settings as far as I know, sensibility and all related stuff will have to be managed from the device's tools.

Yes it automatically detects it. Before you start the game, have TIR on and download any updates. restart then check the games list and X4 will be there. I just started the game got in the cockpit and -Excellent!

As to the situation of the Trackir switching off on foot, I was expecting that. It also makes sense to me. It seems very natural to switch straight to the standard FPS mouse mode when walking - at least for me, but I understand if it don`t suit everyone. I have often heard complaints of motion sickness from some people, but I have never experienced this in all my time gaming, not even slightly. I even play all games with maximum `bob`for movement when it has it. I guess I just don`t get motion sickness . :)

Anyway, TrackIr makes up a lot for this game`s faults and i`ve started a new game to enjoy it all properly. heck, I don`t even care about making loads of money, just exploring now, and skillfully flying my ships around obstacles. I hope to see even more improvements.

Thanks, I just found the X4 entry in the game profile list. Cool, because my Default is used by another game that doesn't it's own entry.

As for FPS - I never got a handle on using it in ARMA or similar games, but I understand people who would like to have that ability. It would however require a separate head/body control, not sure if X4 walk mode has that...

FPS`s in Arma are super realistic. X4`s is quite simple once you get used to it. Just use the keyboard to move back, left, right and the mouse to look and run. Easier than it sounds.

I have a track IR but not tested this in X4 yet, however IIRC isn't there an option in trackIR settings to switch it on off? That might help with menus. Agree what you described seems a bit odd and need addressing.

Also I don`t think some of you are thinking this through when you ask for Trackir while you walk around. It doesn`t work like in a spacecraft or aircraft. It would be extremely disorientating. I tried it in Arma once and wow was that hard to use while moving about on foot.

I suppose as an option it would be ok, but I doubt many people with Trackir would use it.

Edtracker user here.
I'm happy with the support of the device.
Just some suggestions:
- please make weapons not follow head, let them follow mouse only, this is for cases when I shoot primary weapons at mouse point
- please let us look around when on foot. I think this is perfectly good to move in one direction whilst looking around.
X4 is not a destination. It's a journey. Unfortunately in a wrong direction.

There are hotkeys in the TrackIR software itself which can turn on/off head tracking (F9 if memory serves) you don't need the game to provide that.
