Why does the AI for wingmen not follow simple orders?

I have a wing set to defend a position outside the jump gate to Matrix #451 in Ianamus Zura IV. I have now lost several wingmen from this wing because they have attacked the Shipyard or Wharf located in Atiya's Misfortune I, this is 10 sectors away from the position this wing is defending! :evil:

This and other illogical behaviour seems to have become worse with the version 2.0 upgrade. I now spend much game play time in pause mode going round the map removing orders that have been applied by the AI that are not consistant with the standing orders for that ship's wing.

Is this a common occurance?

Yes, since 1.0.
Think the only safe way is to remove any behaviours, have the ship to fly to where you want it and restart previous command.
But it will happen again.
Even had ships with hold pos default behaviour with an active manual order to resupply at a dock just chase down an enemy ship instead, and running into a hostile fleet eventually..

Have you tried 2.20. Seems to be quite number of wingman fixes in there.
If you want a different perspective, stand on your head.
