Game will not start, just bought (2.0) - Fixed by clean install

Post by Tiberiumkyle »

DxDiag link: https://pastebin.com/D1ngrX3t
HyperX headset is the only enabled sound device, all others are disabled.

Bought and installed on steam, nabbed a few mods, game got as far as a small window saying it was extracting a mod. Let it sit for about 10 minutes, zero progress, killed the process via task manager after the in window skip and cancel buttons did nothing. Tried again after making sure no mod files were actually lurking, unsubcribed to workshop mods, tried again, game process just shows up in task manager Image and does nothing.

Checked the troubleshooting thread, updated drivers to what is shown in dxdiag, rebooted system, did a clean reinstall of the game, at no point has the game actually launched after any of these, just the process showing in task manager as with the provided image.
No active antivirus or 3rd party software to get in the way (I keep a tight reign on my processes).

Sidenote: I've been playing the series since X2, so I'm not going anywhere. Was just hoping to get going with this one a bit sooner, rather than waiting 2-3 years as with past games.

Something doesn't seem right about your reported graphics memory in the DxDiag, normally the first figure is the sum of the two that follow. Have you adjusted something related in the OS/BIOS set up?

Display Memory: 3712 MB
Dedicated Memory: 3992 MB
Shared Memory: 3816 MB

I know that you have Win7 but your multiple sound drivers do seem outdated (2012/13). I'm sure you can update your Realtek onboard sound chipset driver from the Realtek update site and you can disable any sound devices and drivers that you do not use in Device Manager, Sound/Audio Devices (right-click on a device in the list for an enable/disable pop-up).

Win7 DxDiags do not include error reporting so are there any related useful error reports in Event Viewer?

EDIT: Steam just updated itself and it may be worth trying again anyway.

No luck with steam update. Haven't done anything with OS or bios settings to muck with the GPU, and the realtek sound device isn't even enabled. As I mentioned, only the HyperX headset is enabled for sound devices.
No error reports in Event Viewer.

If devices and drivers are listed in the DxDiag then they are still enabled. Unless you disabled them *after* running that DxDiag then they are still there and active.

Somebody else just solved their similar issue by updating their graphics driver - but theirs was probably an AMD card rather than a Nvidia one and they may not be using Win7.

I can dig around to see if they need to be even more disabled than that after work. As mentioned in first post, GPU drivers have already been updated as part of initial troubleshooting.

Edit: All but the HyperX disabled at windows device manager level. Rebooted, tried again, same results.

Tried another clean install, and now it works. No idea why it wasn't before, still.
