Thoughts on Research - and SETA

Post by BattleXer »

Hi all,

I just yesterday found all the parts for finally completing the SETA drive, which also coincided with me setting about doing my first bit of research at the player HQ...

And 2 hours later I had all he research completed. As in all of it. All trees of all researchable data. :o :gruebel:

Seems to me rather weird to be able to do that in one session. And also seems like a wasted opportunity to sink some resources.
I haven't really progressed any further with the crafting of Mods, so maybe that's where the time will be spent...
But both the teleportation and station scanning require no further input. And they are half the tree done.

Is this meant to be like this, or are the devs planning to flesh this out further in the future?
What are your thoughts?

Cheers.

I think it's place holder atm, being able to complete all research in 2 hours... where's the sense of accomplishment for that, no point at all behind it as it is. There is a mod out there that turns around and makes it so resources are used in research and the time it takes to research appears to be longer as well. Now here's something I noticed in the game, these crystals you mine off of asteroids, they'd be a good use for research seeing how rare some of them are and how much you need to grind to collect them, which isn't bad mind you. Currently they only do one thing in the game and that is to gain credits if you're willing to go out and mine them. Making them be used in research would give them more purpose.

I like the crystal idea. Maybe you could also make it so that you'd have to at least have built one of every researched mod, before you can research the next tier?!
Ofc this wouldn't exactly help with padding out the teleportation or scanning research...

Welcome to the club. Many of us have mentioned how wrong this feels. In fact I stopped doing research about half way because I saw how stupid it was that each one was so short. I`m literally forcing myself to go slow to make it feel like research. I didn`t want to finish it in 2 hours. I can`t think of any other game, even ridiculously easy ones, with such an obviously incomplete and rushed mechanic. Why even bother with a research mechanic? it`s that bad.

And the Dev`s silence on the matter just makes it even more obvious that something went very wrong here.
1. Please do more on NPC civilian/uniform variety, and bio customisations, Devs.
2. Stations need sirens/warnings when enemy is close in numbers or Station in danger of destruction (in Sandbox).
Yes, for immersion. Thankyou ahead of time. (Edit: This is actually happening!!!)

I would have liked if ship modifications were part of research. Ship tuning in X3 really helped give your ships an edge over other factions but, X4's ship modifications is quite a hassle to install on 50+ ships. Not to mention all the crafting materials you have to farm (cannot buy them) and ships always end up with different speeds, which screws up formations even more.

My Eclipses could really do with a bit more speed considering how fast the Cerberus is by default. It keeps outrunning it's fighter escorts and then finds itself isolated in combat.

This! So much this!

I got a few modifications, but the idea of specs based on a dice roll is very unappealing. I found myself reloading saves if I got a bad roll. I know, bad form... but it's a bad mechanic too.
The RNG combined with the effort required to collect resources is out of place in an X# game.

Please, read this post before you guys go on about how the devs are ignoring this subject:

Update 3.00
As some of you may already have figured out, one cool feature of X4 is the ability to own entire sectors and even change their names. With 3.00 we aim to build upon this with a number of features to help you benefit from sector control. You can then basically become your own faction with your own set of rules.
For all updates, we are working on better missions. At the latest for 3.00 we plan to have a number of new and improved combat missions in particular. An area we want to combine this with is improved research (in the player HQ) and the ability to potentially even move the player HQ to a different location.
An early gameplay feature that 3.00 will improve is the ability to dock directly at station with a spacesuit and to get other NPC ships to transport you, by offering missions to them.
With 3.00 at the latest, we want to have at least one new gamestart. There is a chance that this will have some interesting new features.

I had some thoughts on what might be some cool research mechanics they could introduce, which post was promptly ignored by everyone and got buried :)
