When I try to start X4, Steam says its preparing to launch the game. Within a second that box disappears and nothing else shows up. I don't see any running process that looks like X4 and Steam validated the game files. Advice appreciated!
Other people talk about it crashing and submitting a crashfile, but I don't see anything suggesting it's crashing. I've also seen remarks about graphics card hardware, and I'm not sure how to check those stats. I saw the post with common issues mention the Read Only setting, but that's not the case for me. I'm also watching in Process Explorer and I don't even see a new process start from Steam.

!@#$%^&, I ran the X4.exe directly without steam and got the "Vulkan-1.dll" missing popup. I have an AMD Radeon HD 6900, which apparently isn't compatible. I've been looking forward to this game for so long, I don't know whether to get a Steam refund or wait until I upgrade 'someday'.

I'm afraid we can't help you there. Your card is several generations below the minimum requirements for both Vulkan and X4. Whether you wait or refund is entirely up to you, but either way it's a salutary reminder to check the minimum requirements for a game before you buy!
