Getting captain skills to 3 or more stars?
I have a trading vessel, a Mercury vanguard and I can't auto trade with it because the captain is only 2 stars. I sent him out to explore, but I was wondering, without having to try to locate a captain that is 3 stars and tell him to take over that ship, how does a captain upgrade in the game?

They upgrade by performing actions over time. It's a slow process though. Maybe stick him in a combat ship and set it on patrol somewhere?tc1961 wrote: ↑Sun, 16. My station manager went from 0 star in management to 4 star in about a week of running a station, which wasn't to bad. But my experience with piloting skill is it's much slower. Maybe 1 star gain in the same time period.

This helps, the current rate of captains or crew leveling up is abysmal. I've heard people having captains on auto trade for days and not go up a single star

I got no skillups for any of my autotraders i think yet. After days of trading i'd expect some increase in skills.
No matter if its behaviour trading or the context menu command.
I have seen in a thread that fighting is way quicker - strip a xen station of defences and let those M traders hit it for a while...?
Sounds a bit absurd but might worth a try.

I get all my experienced crew members from autominers
They gain skills in hours rather than days.
Don't put marines on them, just fill it with crew and leave to do their thing
reassign/resupply as needed

My trading captains are gaining skill at a decent rate. With only one problem: they gain *managing* skill, not piloting
It seems trading is faster to create all round pilot/managers, but also means it's gonna take a LONG time to get a 2 stars to 3 so you can put him on galaxy trade. Having them fight, however, trains piloting MUCH quicker. A bit hard to do in the universe how it is right now, though, unless you exploit the system (IE: make them attack a defenseless station for half an hour or so).

im not sure whats wrong with my x4 but i get nearly every captain/pilot with 4 star piloting and 3 star moral. i feel like cheating every time i buy a ship but well, skills doesnt seem to add more than enabling auto actions so... other than that ive never noticed that any of my pilots/captains/managers would have ever gained skill, marines do with boarding and engineers definitely do by repairing
