X4: Foundations - Not all as bad as I thought...

Post by Dreamora »

OK... OK... I came in here the other day complaining about not having Relative Mouse movements to fly the ship, I said I hated the mouse steering (which I still do...) but now that I have forced myself to get used to it, I am actually enjoying the game quite a bit more than I originally had during my first impressions. I was just about ready to write this off as a flop like X-Rebirth... (cough).

OK so a few things I wanted to point out that I think were done correctly;

I love that the stations require building material to manufacture ships, I even carelessly found out how detrimental this could be to an early game player as I started a new game and quickly exploited the repair quests to max out my ships equipment just to find out that I could not launch because I had not paid attention to the warning on the construction screen that said, "not all the materials are available". Luckily this was right before bedtime so I let it sit overnight and was pleasantly surprised that my ship modifications were finished the next morning.

Another thing that I like is that you are not overwhelmingly swarmed with enemy ships and missiles like in AP. I feel like the combat is more meaningful and more substantial in this new iteration, especially with the subsystems targeting on larger ships. ( I really love this feature).

I know a lot of people complaining about slow crew leveling times, I think they forget about the SETA drive. Once you acquire your SETA drive, crews actually level fairly quickly. I was originally upset over how slow the crews were leveling until I discovered the SETA drive was still in the game. Once I got my SETA drive I quickly got over my displeasure of the slow crew levels.

The game is grindy but just so much as it needs to be to make you feel like you have earned something, and not so much as to make you feel like you are getting no where.

I would also like to point out that the patches have been steadily incoming as well which is also very nice to see.

Thanks Egosoft, we have waited a VERY long time for this game and I will say money well spent.
