Quite underwhelmed by the teleporter. Where are the jump drives?

Post by VALERIVS »

I have to say I do not like the teleporter at all. I can see that this is meant to be a way to easily switch to here and there when you have made progress and own many ships, stations and whatnot, but to me it just feels like cheating, especially since there is no cooldown.

Also I do not want to teleport as a person. I'd rather like to jump to a place with my ship that I am currently flying. So... where are the jump drives? :) These should also have some sort of limitation of course. Maybe not in range (tier 3 jump drives should take you anywhere in the galaxy), but a cooldown or the need for specific jump drive fuel (which you can run out of and have to buy/craft again) or something else.

I'd also very much like to see jump drives but they need to be rather restrictive imo. I'd like to see them be limited to Destroyers, Carriers, and maybe a jump capable freighter. Ranges should be relatively short and the cost in energy cells should be rather high. Both a spool up time and a not insignificant cool down would also be welcome. To limit the potential usage as an easy out in combat, ship movement could be diminished and shields could temporarily go offline while the drive spools up.

Yes i`m not a fan of the teleport either.
1. Please do more on NPC civilian/uniform variety, and bio customisations, Devs.
2. Stations need sirens/warnings when enemy is close in numbers or Station in danger of destruction (in Sandbox).
Yes, for immersion. Thankyou ahead of time. (Edit: This is actually happening!!!)

Before they launched they gave plenty of reasons not to include jump drives, and I agree. No jumpdrives ads a lot more to the game in terms of strategy and planning.

I think in the X lore the only reason that long-distance space travel is possible in the first place is via Jump Gates (not jump drives).

Is such a thing really needed or desirable? Small and Medium ships certainly don't need it, the highways are fast enough for them. Capitals could use it, but maybe the intent is to make them slower to respond. It makes their deployment much more strategic in nature.

IMO removing the jump drives was a great idea. Distances actually mean anything now, and Ego can give some meaningful strategic value to the map layout without resorting to gimmicks such as jump beacons (and the associated ship cemeteries when enemy factions use the same beacon).

The player still has great freedom of movement as soon as he has a few ships strategically placed around the universe.
