[Request] Service Crews that actually service the ship they are on
So it seems that even though crew earn points in engineering but here's a sad fact, they do not, I repeat do not repair or service the ship they are on. It appears in the rush to get the game out the door the devs left out MANY features which anyone with common sense would have put in before releasing. One of those is the ability to actually have your crew do something or having a purpose. So liek can we get this feature modded in until the devs get around to 'fixing' it?

I'm pretty sure service crew do actually repair the ship, it just takes time. The crew on the mining ship I boarded earlier fixed it to full hull and repaired the turrets and stuff, it just took a long time.

Hmm I was told in another thread that crews don't so... yeah... you can see why I would toss this out there at first. Anyone else back this up?

if it is working at all.. it is very slow. My nemisis's shields were shreded by missles and then I took some hull damage. I was going to go to the shipyard, but I got distracted by some trading micromanagment. after that I forgot to go to the shipyard. I THINK my hull went up the next time I looked (I do have a full crew of engineers), but I couldn't remember if it went up or I just miss read the first time

They definitely work, but it seems like there are some unclear limitations on it. Experience and some comments by devs suggests that the repairs don't necessarily always go up to 100% hull status, but it's not at all clear exactly how it's supposed to work

The repair script is pretty slow and inefficient, probably by design. It's only a thing to begin with because of the introduction of surface elements and doesn't seem to be intended to replace maintenance at shipyards. Think of it as an emergency repairs system. Your engineers will ensure your ship is functional enough to get to a shipyard for "real" repairs and not much else beyond that.
As for hull repairs, here's how the code suggests it works for ships: "ship engineer repairs up to a value between 60% and 100%, dependent on skill". For stations, repairs supposedly always go up to 100%.

How much does the number of service crew matter? Say 1 vs 5 vs 10? Is there a point where you have too many (ie pointless)

My crews have repaired my ships a number of times. They take a long while before they start the repairs, and they only appear to go up to 75% but they do repair. I don't know if they'll repair docked ships too or not.
The 75% level might be based on skill, but I know they changed Rebirth to always have 100% repairs, just slower, if you Engineer wasn't very good. With the entire service crew taking the place of a single engineer, I'd hope to always get 100% repairs...eventually.
Oh, repairs work with or without repair drones on the ship.
