Mining drill mk2

Bought a new mining ship, equipped it with a mining drill mk2 to start mining manually. The mk2 is better than mk1? It's more expensive but the encyclopedia is empty so no way to tell.

Anyway, fly to an asteroid field, select a rock with a high yield and fire away. Except nothing happens. So how exactly do I use the mining drill?

Tried giving my pilot an order but all behaviour fields are greyed out.
