When you assign a ship to escort duty to a miner or trader, the escort ship will spam awaiting orders whenever it completes a directive given by the overseer.
Specific example:
Assign a miner to a station as "miner" role.
Assign an escort ship to the miner as "defend" role.
The miner will pick a location to mine at and begin moving there (in travel mode).
The miner will also issue a "fly-to and wait" order to the escorts at the same location, who proceed there in travel mode.
When the escort reaches the destination (before the miner) it will alert the player with the "awaiting orders" dialogue.
This quickly becomes very annoying when there are dozens of squads assigned in this manner. Ideally, subordinates should never alert the player directly when completing a directive, even if they are subordinate to the ship the player is currently flying.

You can turn of notification for each ship, right? Not sure if that works for all orders tough.
I have this same issue, but my primary complaint isn't the notifications so much as the issue of the escort ships abandoning the defenseless ship.
You see... the problem with the current "Defend" role as an Escort in the Wing is that the escort ships race far ahead of the defenseless ship that needs them. As mentioned, they fly and wait to the destination of the ship they are protecting.
That presents a problem, because now all the defensive forces are waiting at a station 1-3 jumps away while my trader ships slowly travel along and get ambushed by pirates.
So, the Escort system seems broken in that they should "Follow" the escorted ship, not "Fly and Wait" to the destination… leaving the poor trader alone and defenseless cause they want to race to the finish line.
Edit: You can see all of the NPC faction wing commanders moving around with their entire wing with them. When they move, the entire wing moves with them. So why do the player created wings have escort ships rushing off far away from the wing commander they are told to protect?

Basically for now it's only playable if you just to go hunt some ships and play with your own ship or babysit your trader.
At this stage the game is too broken to be a full x experience. All the important "Xy" stuuf isn't quite working right.
But as a space shooter it's working almost fine (except turrets being broken, and bad AI, and some other issues), well maybe it's not even quite for that yet, either.
It occurs to me, as I listen to eight NPC wings ask for orders, that I never heard anyone I had given a command to say "awaiting orders" when the command was complete (not counting comm communications). However, the NPC fighters I assigned to my station-controlled traders are being vocal about needing orders when they shouldn't be. Not unlike the problem with the reversed speaker sounds (front, rear), this may also be a form of reversed code.
I get this as well for my assigned defenders and it is... annoying. I'm at work and can't check, but if there is a 'defend X ship" default behavior that might work around it.

You can manually assign each ship to defend another ship by setting the ship's default behavior to 'Protect Ship' in the combat menu. You have to remove the ship from the wing first of course. It's slower and less useful than assigning the ships as a wing, but the silence is worth it.
I didn't notice this issue being addressed in the 1.50 patch or any of the earlier ones. Has Egosoft acknowledged this bug or made any plans to address it?
Of everything in this game that isn't quite right, frustrating and a bit buggy (ie. Escorts not escorting even with formations set).
This one single "bug" has caused me to play the game muted and genuinely close to finishing my "game" and not playing anymore.
Especially when your in SETA. "Awaiting Orders" every 10 to 15 seconds was driving me insane. EgoSoft, please make it so "subordinates in escort" do not spam this, as my trading fleet keeps getting decimated by pirates I have to send decent escorts with them, so each ship has a few heavy fighters (minimum) and it is literally every 10-15 seconds in SETA I hear "awaiting orders".
Please, I beg of you, fix this! I want my game sound back.
Totally agree - "awaiting orders" should be for ships without assigned superiors/commanders and active default behaviours like protect. In other words "awaiting orders" should come only from a ship that has finished all its manually assigned tasks and is wasting time, and even in that case perhaps there should be an option to reply "understood, just await further orders" to get it to stay quiet. You can't turn off sound entirely or you miss the 'attacked by pirates' / harassed by ... alerts. Hugely annoying with 2 dozen ships+ especially now that pilots have all been removed from the galaxy and you need to have a dozen couriers sitting around as 3 star pilot storage.
'waiting for orders' is especially great when you don't know who it is, that's waiting for orders.
Yes, there's ways to find it out - but would be real nice if it was displayed somewhere, at least for a second or two. I don't know the faces from all my ship captains (and many look the same anyway)

There is a “nice bug” with this.
If you manually set default behavior to “protect ship” then add it to wing behavior do not changes to “escort ship”.
This way it is possible to get real escort that follows its commander (and do not spam “awaiting orders”) AND have it in wing (less clutter in list) at the same time.
Naturally, it is not reliable and may not work for everyone, but for me it happens 100% time if I set escort in this specific way.
