how do they really work? They seem to give pretty random numbers. I'm trying to do "find the resource" quests and laid down around 20 probes in the sector. Numbers are not even remotelly related to the surroundings. I may place one just between 3 asteroid each with 1k+ ore and probes says "no resources at all", sometimes it says "ice 0.3" when there is no ice within 20km in any direction.
How do they work and how to find any spot? (also obvious question do they help ANYTHING? If I'm mining myself I just mine those asteroids with 1k+ resources which is enough to fill M ship. NPC miners seems to find asteroids just as well, just much slower to collect them. The numbers resource probe gives doesn't correspond with actuall asteroids, so.. ?

Re: Resource probes
I don't use them, they seem worthless. A 3km (radius or diameter, I don't know the Encyclopedia doesn't say) is paltry and barely even covers one asteroid sometimes. I had similar unluck when doing "Find X/Y resources" missions, putting it right next to some well-filled asteroids and it wasn't enough, so I just started putting them down in random spots and eventually found one. I stopped doing those missions.
