I do not know if this is intentional or not, but i accidently had a scoutship fly WAY out of the border, and this resulted in a larger map.
My trading ships went a bit bonkers out there, so had to give them new orders and then it worked okay again.
But looking at the map, the greyed zone is off in the borders of the zone, by alot.
Past the borders, i have found more asteroid fields and gas fields so it seemes to be intentional, but highly impractical?
This goes for the zone Grand Exchange 1, and Hatikvah's Choice 1 so far. The borders of black hole sun did indeed work however and just pushed me back when i came too close to the border.
OR it did not push me, but it felt like it, and had the zone expand just a tiny bit.
What goes against this being intentional however, was Hatikvah's Choice 1 had me fly too far away and got me ending up UNDER the Argon prime zone, but not in it.
How this happend in the end?
I used a perseus Scout to map out GE1 and while i didnt look, it took its liberty to fly off straight to the left, and then took a 90 degree turn straight down.

working as intended the sectors are supposed to grow depending on the need for stations. the ai is supposed to build new stations so the longer you play the more space is needed.
i tip supposed since i only witnessed station expansion.

Oh, is this why some sectors keep having new fog of war?
I remember being pissed i had to re-scout some small sectors cos the fog of war suddenly appeared, thought it was bugged. Then somehow i felt that sector's map got bigger and condensed.

I wonder if the ai will build new highways if the map stretches far enough and a bunch of industry is built out there? Probably not very useful if they won't.
Ayn Rand was correct.

That's interesting to hear. I can't really complain about the small universe if it grows larger by itself...
Maybe some additional pirate stations can be added "off-map" as well, maybe they'll build one themselves if given the chance and time.

Yep, intended, and some things also are intended to spawn outside of the initial borders. And you'll notice that even in a new game not all sectors have the same scale (place to satellites in two adjacent sectors, and their radar range, which is the same, will look like having different sizes). However either the initial seed or some of dynamically spawned stations get overboard at times, appearing far too much outside the average ranges, making, in the long run, for a kind of messy looking map and some questionable gameplay (cruising for half an hour into the void to reach a station, bad for the player and also for the NPC traders that are meant to keep the economy alive).
