So the question in my mind is can the XR ice asteroids be added into X4 either as a mod, as-is or some new object with the appearance.

The key being addition not neccasarily change what is there because I like both the new and the old.

True that ice in rebirth was gorgeous. But performance ?

Not sure if you guys have noticed, but Rebirth uses such trickery that it does seem graphically superior to X4. I just realised it yesterday when booting up Rebirth to compare something with X4.

Now I want to make a comparison video of the two games.
