How to use the repair drones?

How to use the repair drones?
I am really glad that I can load a bunch of drones, but cant figure out how to use them. Are they meant to repair other ships or they can only reapir the ship that asignet to?

I believe they seem to add a small amount of hull regeneration to the ship they're on.
