there where a lot of pirates in the start of the game. but i haven't seen any pirates for many hours of gameplay. that's like 30h+ seen a so the lest one.
this me by related to this.
and the ships that i stole from the pirates are attacking my from time to time like the are still pirates. with treats and all.
i normally order my ship to explore to let thame have something to do so the dont attack my.

the NPC factions wipe them out fairly quickly, after about 5 hours of gameplay i think they are basically nonexistant except distant corners of the zones they are in. having the same problem on my game. just started a fresh save with today's update due to overwhelming issues with prior save.

I too noticed a distinct lack of "pirates" by the time I was a good few hours into the game - I've not seen one in at least fifteen hours of play.
However, I think the "Pirates" were just somewhat more aggressive members of a Faction I was on quite poor terms with at gamestart. As I traded and did the odd mission - while flying all over the place - I've managed to build a positive relationship with these factions. As such, I don't get these "pirates" any more.
I did observe early-game that many of the ships of the faction that were attacking me, were perfectly neutral, as were their stations. it would also explain why sometimes, when I shot at one of these hostile dudes first - after they'd tried to steal my cargo you understand - I'd get a reprimand from a location station. If however, I allowed them to shoot me a couple of times first, all was well.
Note: these guys usually started Blue (neutral) to me, they "scanned" my cargo from 20-30km away, then asked me to drop stuff; They were NOT illegal wares. When I declined they instantly went red and, if I shot them before they shot me, that's when I got the warning - even though they were on an attack run against me.
So, some faction relation stuff going on....at least that what it looks like. I guess though it's the same as in X3 - which I've played the LItcube mod fairly recently - where you can befriend the Pirate faction.
