commanding mining ships...or any other ship Update 1.20

I have installed the 1.20 update.

I have bought a few mining ships which are still docked where I purchased them

I have a caption and crew on each but:
I cant assign job roles.
I cant communicate them to do anything

I can open coms and then have the few options, so I choose work for me somewhere else ….but cant select anywhere

I have tried to do the help-tutorial but it just says I need another ship with a captian….which I have

can anyone advise

did you try to open map, click the ship you want to assign and then right click on the map for a specific job?
I only figured out this yesterday when trying to sell the ship...

This also confused me until I found a post on the forums explaining it - and I also found that the tutorial refused to start even though I had two ships with captains plus my own ship.

Basically, you don't use comms to order pilots around anymore. Instead, you open the map, select the ship to give an order to, right click on the thing you want them to interact with (mining area, station to trade at, empty space) and give them an order from the context menu in the map.

Once you've queued the order(s) up you sometimes then have to right click on the ship again and choose "Proceed with current orders" to get them to start actually doing what you asked them to do - I think this is needed when they are docked somewhere so you can perform a few actions before they set off.

As well as setting their role to AutoMine have you selected a resource for them to actually go and get? You have to choose one.

You don't have to manually send them to mine one specific asteroid you have selected - the AutoMine role will allow them to go find their own.

Yeah the "right-click and then click select" thing when telling npcs to work somewhere else really did my head in before I read this. Seems like the worst possible way to implement selecting things.

I have to say out of all the little bugs I have seen the in the last 4 days of bleary eyed gameplay the one above the ‘select’ button was the most nauseating...literally how bad was that coded guys just allow double clicking please on the ships

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I actually used coms and asked them to join me. Then I assigned them tasks. Ie mining or trading, Defense and off they went.

Will be annoying having them all grouped with me

I will try the options you guys mention and see what happens
