Egosoft, Please send crewmen to school.

Post by Jes McDevlin »

Either I have a crew full of 3* retards or, the aiming and piloting algorithm is WAY off in this game. And it cant be the algorithms. Nah.... my beloved Egosoft would never screw up this bad,... would they?

So on a whim I decided to sic my Cerberus Frigate on a single Xenon Recon Fighter. I stood on it's docking platform to watch the battle. Not once did it fire either of it's forward weapons. Which I guess is alright, after all it has 4 turrets on it, and that should be more than enough for a single little recon ship; right?

Well after 15 mins of watching my ship flail around without hitting a single time, I decided it was time to call in some backup. So I launched my Eclipse Heavy Fighter from it's launch pad.

I expected an epic space battle! And boy did I get one. Matter of fact, while I type this, its still going... for more than 45 mins at this point...

So after 45 mins, this Cerberus Frigate with 2 forward beam lasers (It wont use) and 4 multi cannon turrets as well as my Eclipse Vanguard with 2 beams and 2 multi-cannons, set to defend my Cerberus, nothing has really gone on.

Oh,... Save for the fact MY CERBERUS IS SHOOTING ITSELF WITH ITS TURRETS. Yep, 45 mins in, my multi-million credit ship has almost blown ITSELF up fighting a lone recon ship who,... I don't think has fired its guns once but has just danced around in circles. Meanwhile, in la-la-land, my heavy fighter that is supposed to be helping has just,... well I don't know what its doing.... its slowly meandering off to the side and not even trying to fight. I think the pilot is as amuse... No, bewildered as I am.

So Dear Egosoft, Please, find it in your heart to send your crewmen in the game to school.
Clearly the X universe's education system has failed them and they need proper tutelage.
:<

As much as this is a joke I think it could be a real thing. Why not have crew academy on your station to train up officers for a credit cost? You know,... after you "fix" the "totally not broken" aiming and flight algorithm "features". >.>

PS: Just as I finished this up right at an hour in, a Kestrel Sentinel came in and murdered the Xenon Recon ship in 1 pass and flew off.... Leaving my frigate at 25% Hp form self mutilation... >_< Its a good thing I saved before this fight.....

Its things like these that make me so angry.

Clearly a CORE feature that worked before (in X:R and past games) is not working here anymore.

What happened? Why wasnt this fixed before release? SURELY someone noticed this right?

Its likely because they wanted it out in time for the big ole' holiday sale. It was likely the fault of some corporate big wig putting his heel on the throat of his dev team.

Sad story that happens all too often.

Dev team says: "We either need more time or more people."
Bigwig says: "HAH! Here is your deadline and we just fired 5 devs because they drank too much of our office's 'complementary' coffee."

All in all i'm not surprised it is a buggy mess. While I could sit here and be angry that I spent so much on it, I instead chose to let them know it was an issue, and even gave them a little advice on something the game could use. Pilot school.

If they(egosoft) are worthy of their customer's loyalty and money, they will fix it. If not, well, they may not miss me as one sale on their next game, but i'm not alone. The term "We are legion." comes to mind. Keep the people happy, and you keep the wheels turning. And I can tell you this, as a trucker or in any job period, if the wheels aren't turning, you're burning time and money.

I'm still miffed after X: Rebirth's total travesty of a departure from the normality of the rest of the X series. So my happiness relies on this game being taken seriously by them. As does many many other fans'. And so far I like what I see. I just see it needs more time to get a good spit shine. :>

Yeah I also think that was the case. End of the year coming up, good time to release stuff, financially speaking. Sadly X4 wasnt ready for it.

While I do criticize the game a lot, ultimately I like the game. It both looks great and is great when its working. Once they fix the game which Im confident that they will as proven time and again in the past (I hated X:R so much but ive tried it a few months ago and its not that bad anymore ... I wont be playing it because i dont think its an X game but for what it is, its not bad), this new entry to the X series will be a great addition to this universe.

For me its a waiting game for now. I'll probably give them a month or two to iron out the big issues and for modders to get going and then will probably be back in force :)

This right here; is what nearly all of us are saying. "For me its a waiting game for now. I'll probably give them a month or two to iron out the big issues and for modders to get going and then will probably be back in force :)"

We know it'll be good, we know,... Hope they'll fix it. But we wont let them go No-Mans-Sky on us and just go silent after release. We just want to know action is being taken. Till then, bug report what you can, and play what you can. Don't know about anyone else but i'm already hyped about the expansion coming next year. The expansions tended to breathe all new life into the previous X games for me.

I second the idea of a flight training. I opened a MOD request in the MOdding Forum yesterday.

"Everything new is well-forgotten old."

X3 is way better, I think.

But X4 will be able to get same features eventually
"X4 use two cores pretty heavily, for its core activities, and a few others more variably for other tasks.", - so it can work better, can't it ?

You made my day!

This is the most entertaining bug report I ever read.

Thumbs up!

Just a note: no "corporate" publishers rushing the poor devs this time. Egosoft self published the game, so if they rushed the launch to stay inside the big sale season, the responsibility lies all on them.

But let's be honest, I don't think this was the case. If the issue was only that you had to rush the game, what would you normally do? Well, I'd copy paste my old fight script from the previous game (same engine, I can with very little modifications), which might turn out being unsatisfying for a plethora of reasons, but it has been proven to work (after it was patched time and time again back then). Instead - like with many other features - they decided to scrap a lot of things (both bad and good), and get back to the drawing board. Unfortunately, Egosoft is always pretty bad converting the drawing board into anything functional, they almost always fail at first try. They do get there a year later, and they do it good, but before that they have a record of being just very, very messy.
