* ion blaster
* beam emitter
* bolt repeater
* pulse laser
* plasma cannon
* shard battery
which one is good for damaging shields?
which one is good for damaging hulls?
which one is good all around?
i feel like this is an important part of the game and yet there's no info about this in the game anywhere. not in the encyclopedia or tooltips. how much damage does each one does? what's the range? etc. are these all just cosmetics because there are no stats or info?
what about missiles? how are these types different from one another:
* dumbfire launchers
* tracking launchers
* torpedo launchers
thanks for any info!
what does the different weapon types do?

Re: what does the different weapon types do?
Seems like the Bolt Repeater is just plain best at everything, and everything else sucks.
Shard Battery is like a shotgun but has too much spread to be useful.
Pulse Laser is your dinky start gun that does decent shield damage but almost no hull damage.
Ion blaster does a lot of shield damage, but the hull damage is so low as to make it not worthwhile.
Beam emitter hits instantly but does low damage.
Plasma cannon does a lot of damage but is super slow.
For the missiles, pretty much what it says on the can. Dumbfire launches unguided rockets, tracker launches guided missiles, and torpedo launches anticapital torpedoes.

Re: what does the different weapon types do?
the info is in the encylopedia, check the middle of the screen info , tells you the power 35mw of what ever thats the damage, as for hull vs shields not sure sure if there is a thing anymore.
They also show the range but they are all 2-3km and a speed of 300 - 7000km
Missiles are simple
Dumbfire it is what it says and in X3 / RL it fires in a straight line no guidance so its a hit or miss
Torpedos in RL are dumbfire too but bigger slower versions usually used against the bigger ships with no manuverability
Tracking is friend/foe or heat seekers

Re: what does the different weapon types do?
Pulse lasers are reasonable as a weapon, fast to hit (won't miss much), infinite, but not great damage. Also it has the fastest targeting.
Beams do more damage but they overheat eventually. They are the fastest/precise weapon, good for not hitting station when shooting those little red targets and good at lowering hull in controlled way to make them leave the ship for capturing.
Repeater is stronger then others but slower so it misses more (also it has "unpredictable" reload times, making burst damage somewhat annoying). But I would say they are best because AI is not great and every ship tries to run directly towards you so you won't miss much even with slower bullets. Also won't overheat.
Ions are the only asymmetric weapon with 1/3rd hull damage and 5x shield damage, only good as secondary weapon
Plasmas are quite slow moving very strong balls. They fire once per second and they overheat after 4-5 shot. Good for M ships (and maybe higher, haven't tried). And similar to repeater as AI tries to fly directly at you, you won't miss. This is the most damaging weapon.
I currently run with 3 repeaters as primary and 2 plasmas as secondary, to see how it goes (and beam turrets, tho they don't do much, but if they ever get precise they will be good at shooting missiles off my back
maybe).
