I have a Saitec X52 it works perfectly in all other games.
In X4 I can't get any fine control to follow any enemy it just moves when it wants to.
I have turned down the dead zone and the sensitivity, that has helped but it's not as controllable as I would like.
I have tried using the mouse but can't get on with it for fighting.
Any ideas as to what I can do.

Re: X 52 Stick
I also have the X52 and I'm mapping everything.
It is like 90% ready with flight like Elite Dangerous. I'm also setting the menu navigation for quick things, I'm using all the buttons and combinations like pinkie+pov direction to open menus (like the menu system in ED using the same HOTAS).
Mouse and keyboard are still needed if you want map navigation and to walk in station.
I will share the profile when it is complete, I'm still tweaking some things while I play to make everything intuitive.

Make sure you're mapping the movement to the 'axis' area instead of the 'button' section. That should get rid of the jerky movement. Had that exact same problem. The axis section is at the top.
