I'm curious which weapons people think perform, or perform better over others? Or what their niche uses may be. I've experimented with a handful of them, so I'll list my thoughts on those I've played with.
Beams:
IMHO, the Beams are above and beyond the best weapons in the game. Overpowered actually, yet necessary. Fact is, turret tracking is broken... But guess what, the beams strike instantly, so they're going to hit. Beyond that, their damage and damage output is great.
Plasma Cannons:
Your typical door knocker weapon. Extreme damage, but horribly slow travel rates make this weapon only effective on medium and above ships. But when they hit, they are very, very painful. I dont find any use for them ever though, because there just seemingly are not any hostile ships that are bigger than M, where they would properly shine as amazing hit and run against capitals.
Launchers (any):
Ammunition based, and not cheap either. I consider these wildly useless. Their accuracy is poor and dont feel like they do nearly enough damage to justify the cost.
Bolt Repeater:
I had only looked at these, and by the stats, you kinda go "wtf is this?". In reality, they're actually a very high dps weapon. Sure, the damage output looks low, but it's per shot, and it's a rapid fire weapon. They seem to have a 'magazine', and will pause for a moment before firing again. Never used them in combat though.
Pulse Laser:
Standard cheap starting gun. While one is bad, if you have a ship with 2-3 of these, they're okay. They get the job done, and can sustain fire for a very long time.

Currently the weapons are very bland. I hate the fact that bolt repeater and pulse laser fire in burst fire mode....This is ridiculous.
As about plasma, the projectile is so slow that even a xenon K managed to dodge when it moved...the damage is good but the projectile speed needs a little buff in order to be a true anti capital ship (lol those don't almost don't exist though) weapon.
That shotgun weapon is absolute trash. The damage is low from mid range and it doesn't get any better at close range. By far the worst weapon.
I don't like how all ships from all sizes and shapes can all equip the same weapons. There should be class specific weapons and also faction specific weapons to make "weapons" in general more interesting. Like in X3.

Yeah, is there any way to turn that off? Its pretty frustrating, considering the fire rate is the biggest advantage of those weapon types.

Needs more variety imo. The spread we have now feels too basic.
That said i notice they have a modifications feature for weapons, hulls, modules etc. You can see it in options menu and theres a mod workbench at trading station for it too.
Anyone dabbled in those yet? I'm hoping its some indepth stuff, mods that significantly alter the modules stats, behavior, effects and especially looks.

I was trying 4 Beam Mk2s on a Quasar but they would overheat before I could kill anything, switched to the Bolt Repeaters and they seem great though so I am sticking with those and just putting beams on turrets as everyone seems to be saying they cant hit with other weapons.

The game is great (potential to be the best)
I really dislike the weapons and the weapon system, is it just me or is it not possible to carry more weapons than you have hard points? (a nova with only 2 slots???)
So we end up using beam weapons in player ship, just like XR... bugga
For all it's faults X3 had weapons that made the game, gave it that unique X feeling, 6 or 8 slots with untold combinations for different enemies or situations. I had a scrap in a xenon sector lots of Ns and Ms and a few Ps, if only I had some PAC for the faster ships, then switch to HEPT for the Ps..... sigh. All those acronyms were like a secret language only X players knew. The X4 weapons are too much like ED, boring and generic. I think the baby got tossed out with the bathwater....
I happily embrace all that's new in the game, whether I personally believe it to be an improvement or not, but WEAPONS are just so disappointing now!
(actually I really miss the old ship classification too)

would prefer AA or FAA or PSG, but we only have shotgun, useless shotgun.
