How to board an abandonned ship?

I have found an abandonned Osprey Sentinel, which is completely undamaged.
The tutorial popup was the actual notification I got that that ship was out there.
According to the tutorial, I am to find a signal in scan mode and then "do something with that" and then the ship should be mine.

I have been trying for the last 5 hours to do this but I cannot figure out what I am doing wrong... I have made countless circles around the ship, inch by inch to figure our where this bloody signal is, but I just cannot find it...

I am finding it very hard to make any progress in this game at all and after all these wasted hours trying to claim this ship, I am so frustrated I am ready to throw my PC out of the window...

Can someone please tell me...
1. How I can claim this Osprey Sentinel?
2. alternatively how to cheat so that it becomes mine. If the game mechanics are this poorly designed or there are bugs I will just have to go around those mechanics and/or bugs...

I had exact same problem. Sped good hour trying to figure out how to claim the ship. There was no signal box what to hack!

If you still haven't figured out, then first you have to hire crew from the any station, assign him as military and then go back to the abandoned ship right click on it and click Claim. Your crew will leave your ship in the pod and will claim the ship.
But it is really really buggy now, because he is going circle ship like forever. Just leave him there and go jump to another sector. When you will jump back, ship will be yours.

did you go EVA and seeing if you needed to do it through there? every time I've claimed a ship, I got close w/ the order and then the marines/servicemen did the rest

Unclaimed M-class ships need Marines. Pick some up, fly near the ship, and "claim should light up from your ship (not EVA). This will launch a boarding pod at the unclaimed ship. The pods are wonky as hell and will probably fly around the ship in a circle forever, but leaving the sector will let them actually dock. Pain in the butt, but you'll get your ship.
