First hour impressions

Post by Musicker »

Got home a little over an hour ago, and thankfully my roommate hit the Install button for me when the game went live this morning, so it was all installed and ready to go when I walked in the door.

After an hour, I have gone through the settings and tailored them the way I want, (switch to 4k graphics and Ultra were the first change!) and I've gone through the first 5 tutorial missions, after walking around a bit, and enjoying the visuals and such.

The game is running flawlessly and smooth as silk on my setup, which isn't too far above the minimum specs, both in space and on the Argon Equipment Dock station. I don't have a FPS monitor running, but I can't detect any stuttering or anything. I'm very impressed so far, and enjoying the learning process that I know is integral to any X series game. I am so happy it released on a Friday, so I have all weekend to get familiar with navigating the controls and menus. :)

I know I've only had it running for a little over an hour, but I can already tell, this is going to be the game us diehard X1/2/3 fanatics have been wishing and hoping for since Albion Prelude!

Thanks, Egosoft, I'm having a fantastic Friday evening, thanks to this new X game! Now.. back to the next tutorial mission.. :)

Well, my experience was a bit different :

- Massive sound imbalance between voice and surround noise.
- Good FPS at start, then after 3 tutos it was divided by 4, but my config is not great.
- After clicking my ship waited like 500ms to pitch or yaw.
- The return of the MK 1-2-3 equipment , weapons etc. Why not create special ones with different sound, light and effects.
- On the station TS were landing with a physic of an M5.
- On station, it's mostly, hire, don't know or I hate you.
- Combat music suddenly when I was looking at weapons option for my ship on a station, why?
- The sound near the landing pad is so strong that you just want to mute the game.
- Distress signal on the station using the close radar looking like firework made of paper, I don't know how else I could explain.
- In the shop, no dictionary input about software or other things, what the trading MK1 is for, I don't know.
- Tutorials are horrible for me, small box that go away quickly and get you lost quicker. missing voice and cinematic for them
- Not a great fan of the UI, big simple blue buttons

And truthfully not a big fan of this game at all, even if I know it will get better so will my hardware. but right now the only thing I want to do is to play another 1000H on X3 AP with litcube mod.

My config :
I7 4720HQ
GTX 970M
16Go Ram

The only problems so far is getting my HOTAS setup was a little glitchy and complicated. Would like to have an independent control that turns off the self leveling for the ship without turning on Newtonian physics. Gameplay and graphics smooth as silk on high settings.
my config:
I-7 3770 3.4 MHZ
32 gb Ram in dual mode
GTX 1050 ti with 4gb

Thanks Egosoft you guys got your mojo back , this is exactly what I was hoping for.

Sorry you've had some issues with the game :(

Also the 970M is that on a lappy?

If so that's probably one reason for the delays and missing textures or objects as others seems to have the same issues with that.
I do agree the encyclopedia needs some more descriptive content though!

I read from steam forum that there's option to turn off autoroll (maybe that's what you mean with self leveling?). You can look that up probably?

Yep, 970M is for laptops, and may not have the same robust graphics as a normal 970 card, since it's a low power model.
As far as the encyclopedia, I believe they said that will fill out more and more as you play the game and discover new things..

My first hour impression?
I want my money back.

My second hour impression?
I want my money back.

My third hour impression?
Oke, this is actually just X-Rebirth, same missions same bugs
messy controls, absence of information.
Plot quest not starting, so you wonder for hours in the same sector looking what you could have missed.

My fourth hour impression?
MEMHEX coding not even playin the game

My fifth hour impression?
Lets get all those Steam awards

Totally agree X4 seems really good, but of course it will take many hours to really dive in, but considering the state of the game from a first impression standpoint i imagine we wont be disappointed.

*VIsual's are great
*Smooth performance
*love the music
*station docks are alive with activity
*stations have people movers (those moving walkways like at airports)
*new map is very cool

Pro tip, dont wonder into a docked ship, unless you want to take an unexpected ride :D

Wow, I'm on my 5th hour, and still having a blast. Not sure what the issues are with your system, but I haven't had any problems so far.

11 hours in.

I've upgraded to a Tethys and it's a stupidly sexy ship. I need some freaking maps people. Get to work. Dear God I need the complete instruction manual available via voice command. "Alexa, how do I sell a ship? Alexa, how do I transfer cargo between ships? Alexa, WTF am I doing and how did I get 9 sectors from where I wanted to go?!?"

Only 2 issues I've had. One was a suddenly CTD. Could have been anything. Also my keys keep unbinding and need rebound.

Game is amazing and beautiful and rich and deep. Love it more the more I play it.

My first-hour impression:

Did some tutorials, okay 1 ctd already
What now? Guess I will explore some
Found a sort of abandoned mini station which had some airlocks stating they were leaking, got in my spacesuit, repaired them, airlocks show status okay......what now? There doesn't seem to be a door..... maybe around that corner....CTD

1 hour, 2 ctd and not a single clue on what I can do with the things I find.

Of course, I'm not saving my game every 2 minutes. So after writing this first hour impression, I will start new for the third time.....

I haven't had a single CTD yet, but came across some funny bugs, not major ones though. First few hours impression, amazing. Just found a Cerberus and boarded it. Just upgraded it to have weapons and shields. Trying to do these science missions heh. Explored quite a bit and saw some cool ish.

Experience in first hour:

"Ok, figuring out flight controls."
"Oh crap I shot someone with the space bar!"
"Ooo luckily Tab is still the boost button"
"How the hell do I dock?!"
"Ok ok, tutorial for docking"
"Ugh, can't wait for software for this, but it's relatively fun in the sense that it's not too spoonfed for me"
"Ok, launching and exploring"
"Ooo found a xenon ship"
"Pew pew pew ok got some loot"
"Huh, the station has the icon for a mission"
"How do I get the mission?!"
"Ok, Im stuck in some menu, escape won't work."
"Halp I can't get out of the menu!"
"Halp!"
"Ok, pressed all the keys until menu went away"
"Time to buy some slightly better equipment."
"Ugh, takes a while to get back to the equipment dock."
"Uhhh... what's wrong with this screen?"
"Saving, exiting then reloading later."
I must defend my honor!

They need to make the game start more newb friendly. Or at least make one start, that is specifically for new X players.

I can deal with it, because by now I know the hoops, but the newbs May review bomb this game...

Otherwise my fist impressions are nearly faultless. Well done ES!

I have yet to play since I keep hitting so many bugs sadly:
- Flicker when I tab in borderless window with 3 monitors.
- Half the time I open my Controls when doing tutorials my screen/ui breaks
- I want to shoot with Right Click but it also keeps opening context menu's lol

Overall It's hard to do a few basic stuff for me since I keep running into so many issues sadly. Oh well I'm sure things will get fixed in a few months.

I'm having a really hard time playing this with a 360 controller. I'll have the throttle set. When I yaw the ship, the throttle will sometimes suddenly go to 0. It seems related to when my boresight is pointed at some target. I've noticed that if I'm drifting aimlessly, my throttle stays locked. When my boresight targets something, the throttle drops to 0 and looses the lock at max throttle.
Edit: reloading the game seems to have fixed this.
After about another 30m of flying around, I did a barrel roll and then the game exited :(

I'm busy with work and stuff until midweek next week anyway. Hopefully a few bugfixes for the menus will be out by then, but until then, the game does look beautiful. Even if it's just Rebirth with 1) the ability to fly all ships, 2) actual crafting of resources rather than spawned in, and 3) far more control in station design, really, that's all I would want from an X game :P.

I whimpered when I 1st loaded it up, and had nothing more than a slide show. - Unresponsive menus and a frame every 2 to 3 seconds... I dropped the graphic settings, turned off my virus software and it was still unplayable. - Although my machine isn't the most powerful, it has played Rebirth seamlessly on the highest settings. - But then I found a workaround for controller issues, a hotfix was installed and it's running beautifully. I love the atmospheric feel of the game, the radio chatter and the feeling of an immense environment.

I haven't a clue how to do anything yet, haven't even worked out where missions or listed, and the one thing I thought I'd done was found some hidden cannisters (purple pings on long range scanners.) Well, it turns out they're some kind of anomaly that drains shields... :|

It'll take me a long time to work out how to use the menus, but I can already *feel* the depth of the game. I'll watch out for user-posted video tutorials, will play a little each day and gradually get the hang of what I'd doing.

But I love it. I can see this, given time, is gonna be my favourite X game, and I've played them all since X2.

My first hour impressions were ... less than great.

I dont hate the game but I cant play it in its current state.

- The Ui is terrible
- The sound imbalance is beyond terrible. Often times i cant hear anything anyone is saying because the backround noise and/or ships passing by is so damn loud.
- Turret AI is beyond hopeless. They seem to shoot in the vague direction of the enemy hoping something will land ...
- I still hate walking in stations.
- Tutorials are bad, I couldnt even read the text boxes in time before they disappeared (the bad ui didnt help either) and the directions the tutorial gave were less than ideal. Especially the one with the scanning gimmick. I just skipped that one
- Whats with the scanning gimmick? Press R for 2 seconds to send a pulse, why? Why not have a toggle or something that scans around you? Why the minigame if you could call it that? We also get no indication (except the audio ques) of how much the pulse is charged or the range of it based on its charged ... I happen to press more than 2-3 seconds and it fails ... this is unnecesary !
- The start of the game is a bit confusing. I didnt know what to do next after i tried to complete the various tutorials. I know that some X veterans (especially the ones who played XR a lot) may not have this problem but for someone who hasnt played X games for a while, i was beyond lost in the first 30 min in the game. There should be someone or something that tells you "Hey, go here, do that" to get you started or just to point me in the rough direction of the story or something!

and many more complaints

That being said tho, I dont hate the game. Im sure a lot of the issues with the game will get fixed. Its a step forward compared to XR so kudos to that. The game feels better than XR imo and thats a good thing.

For now, ill skip this game until a few updates get released and after some people start making them mods! To those lovely people, PRETTY PLEASE, MODS! :)
