Every space sim is harsh to learn. Elite is, SC is, this one is no exception.

Btw it is a sandbox, missions are hidden or available only after a few while, so you gonna have to... Do what you want.

What aspect from the Build Fight Think Trade appeals to you the most? If its Build: focus your game on accomplishing that ect. ect. If its story then do as many missions as you can find to unlock more the of the "major" plots

If you don't want a mental exercise, run away from this game series as fast as you can! There is fun to be had, but it takes work.

You can go in the options menu and look at the controls instead of guessing, and learn that way. It's a bit harsh, but possible. Or wait for people to do good introductory guides on Steam or videos on Youtube.

If you'd rather be eased in, why not play one of the more plot-driven X games first? If you're not allergic to old graphics (and terrible cutscenes), X2 still has a lot of charm - I discovered it years after its release and really liked it. Plus you'll know a lot more about the universe, which will make you appreciate other X games more: recent ones are more thin on the lore.
If you hate old graphics, then you could go with X Rebirth which was much maligned but is actually a decent game now despite some remaining tedious elements, and the campaign will walk you through a lot of the series' mechanics. I don't know how well the in-game tutorials have evolved to match the various improved mechanics, though.
