I just dug out my old joystick...err, :(

Post by Gregorovitch »

Oh dear. It's not...working very well. It won't seem to calibrate properly :( It's practically falling apart tbh.

So...anyone got any idea what flying with an Xbox controller would be like?

Don't sweat it, man. These games are most comfortable to use with mouse+keyboard anyway.

I do have a joystick on my side, but I tend to find myself not bothering with it when playing the X games.

Can you crack it open and tune it?
Flying with a controller should be relatively comfortable. I didn't really like M&K in X:R, especially in the highways. Just the slightest bump of the mouse would send me out of the highway.

You could check out the manufacturers web page for the calibration software they should still be available. :)

I've played a lot of Everspace on Steam using my Steam Controller and it works fantastically. Just had to calibrate some of the track pads to mimic a self-centering joystick instead of a mouse and it was great. I'd imagine using an Xbox controller for X4 would be great too since the sticks already self-centre and the control of the ship is basically the same :)

Not as immersive as a joystick perhaps, but I do plan on playing X4 as much as possible on my 4K TV using my controller with a wireless kb+mouse by my lap. Then I can share the experience with the wife until she gets bored and kicks me back to my PC so she can watch some cruddy Asian drama on Netflix :P

I think you should be fine FLYING with an XBox controller. I would still recommend having mouse+keyboard handy since there may be some controls/menus that are not easily accessible while using your controller.

I always disabled mouse steering when I got in the highway to prevent that (actually just before I entered the highway). You can use the strafe keys to play the minigame (though I just ignore it and I'm fine 90% of the time).

I just plugged my joystick in for X4, it has been collecting dust in the loft for a few months. Egosoft have worked on making X4 playable with many input devices :D
