Having to use labyrinthine space highways was my second biggest annoyance in Rebirth,
...right after being forced to walk terrible space station interiors in a terrible avatar, that felt multiple times worse than any ambulation type game I've ever bothered to try.
If its going to suck, just leave it out of the game? A game can sometimes be richer with less.
Are we going to be spared the "space highways" in X4?

They are in but not heavily used like in rebirth they are darker too so not such a eyesore. Walking around is in but much minimized so shouldnt be too bad.

Yeah much more sparsely used and not as much "spaghetti" as in Rebirth from what we saw in the videos. I wasn't crazy about the highways in Rebirth either, but the ones for X4 we've seen so far look much better/more logical.

Darn it, I told them that we'd hidden the X4 devs' FAQ Index Sticky far too cleverly …
Q. I'm curious about the travel system how all that is gonna work?
A. Travel will be similar to XR, whereby the highways will be mostly in straight lines or single radius curves. Not all zones will have highways and you will be able to boost over longer distances. This is following the steps we did in the Home of Light DLC. Additionally, using a feature called "Teleportation" you will be able to teleport between your ships, to travel much more quickly.
Q. With the absence of the jump drive, how do capital ships move between sectors?
A. Bernd: They fly through gates. They fly through highways and they will also use the accelerators, and they have boost drives, of course.

Re: Are we going to be spared the "space highways" in X4?
Highway system was never the issue with X:Rebirth. Issue was with how to use them and what to do with rest of mechanics in game when you them. And r******* minigame that was for no reason in it pre and after redesign of it in patches.
They wanted to fix over reliance on SETA and jump gates. Problem is that when they got rid of SETA they basically had to give every single ship jump engine because without it they took forever to get anywhere.
So imho highway system is fine but it needs to be used sparingly, meaning that it should connect only very distant places while you should travel with your own ship to other sectors like in some X-rebirth mods or Elite.
I hope X4 has seta. It fixes so many design issues with time.

Is there an auto-pillock.
If so, will it be able to use the highways?

X4 has SETA and a "Travel Drive" which has extremely low acceleration and maneuverability but a high top speed cap.
We also have auto pilot. It was able to use highways in Rebirth, so it should be able to here.
No jump drives in this game.
Going to echo Alan Phipps and remind people to double check the Q&A sticky at the top of the forum, has a ton of good info.
