Cannot play HoL - Mod is missing from Steam Workshop

Post by tatakau »

This, I think, is a pretty huge problem.

I played this game for 3 days, over this month, so that I would have the main story complete, everything explored, and a few ships on hand before the Home of Light expansion came out.

But now that it's here, I cannot open my saved games anymore. And why? Because some random person decided to remove their mod from the Steam Workshop, and now EVERY save game across the entire world what used it is now completely broken and will not load.

The mod is Galaxy Station Range. And Egosoft and fanboys, before you start saying "this is your fault for using mods" or "this is not Egosoft's problem", or "this thread belongs in the Scripts and Modding forum", you better think again. This is completely Egosoft's fault, for allowing this kinda stuff to happen in the first place.

So. Ego. How do we fix this?

YorrickVander is the mod author and has stated parts of the mod are broken

http://forum.egosoft.com/viewtopic.php?t=369302

if you're so worried about it I suggest getting the mod that's in the link until he updates the mod.

Further a few mods aren't working properly anymore and or are broken and need fine tuning. Don't go blaming all this on egosoft cause it isn't there responsibility, you want to blame someone complain to the modder not egosoft. They have no control over modders, what they can or can't do. ANd yes I did go there... THIS thread does belong in the scripts and modding forum since what caused the issue is a MOD.

Since I'm such a nice person easy way to fix it is to do what I suggested above. Get Galaxy Station Range v1.3.6, download it and install/activate it and there you go problem SOLVED.

I'm sorry, you think I'm being mad over nothing? You think Egosoft couldn't easily make installing and removing mods a little safer, so that crap like this doesn't happen?

Let's pretend a mod runs a turret script. You have it on all of your ships. Then you uninstall the mod. What should the game do, just simply break because the script is missing now? No, if the script is missing, then the turrets should reset back to default turret scripts.

What about a mod that adds a ware to the game? Hundreds of ships now have this wear on board. Remove the mod, then what should happen? Should the game just crash and refuse to load? No way, just remove all of the broken link wares from the game, that's it, problem solved.

So now we have a mod that increases the trading range for a station. Remove it from the game, then what should we do? Break the entire game? How about no, how about we just reset the manager settings back to default?

I already tried that link, btw. The file didn't work, after copying it into my game extensions directory. And now I'm going to have to research what else I have to do to get this stupid game to work. Problem NOT solved.

I have a right to be mad. So many things about this game have been bull from the very beginning. And some things never change.

You're forgetting something here, when you use mods don't expect to get support from the game developers. They have no control over the content of mods, how they modify the game in anyway. It is entirely up to the user who chooses to use said mods. If they break the game then so be it, it happens. That is the risk you run with running mods.

If you're afraid of this happening then sir you should not be using mods and then expect the developers to help you with it. Again if a mod gets broken BY an update it is entirely up to the mod creator to fix the foul up no the game makers.

I hope you didn't just extract the mod from the link I gave and just drag and drop it into your extensions folder. When you extract it you get the mod folder that's called Galaxy Station Range v1.3.6 inside that folder is another folder called Galaxy Station Range. The second folder is what you need to drop into your extension folder. If you overwrote the old folder, which I do not suggest you do as something can screw up. You need to delete the old folder and drop the new one in. If you did what I suspect the only one to blame for it not working is yourself.

Edit: if you want to remove the mod the mod creator came up with something until he fixes the mod, the mod was mistakenly removed by him from steam while he was removing mods he was no longer updating.

Turn steam updates off in game, delete gsr, install this in its place. Load game, deactivate GSR, save again. Remove this patch as new version will have a new ws_ number when uploaded.

This is indeed being moved to S&M forum as that is where modded games and their issues are discussed amongst people who have a better chance of know how to help you.

The game makes every effort to handle the removal of mods smoothly, but it is impossible to cater for every possible thing that a mod might change. Nor is it possible to ensure that every possible update works with every possible mod.

It is a mod developer's responsibility to deal with any problems caused by their mod, and it is a mod user's responsibility to ensure that they understand what they are getting themselves into when they modify their game with something created by a third party. It is also the responsibility of a mod user to respect the fact that mod developers work on their mods in their own free time and of their own free will, and to give them time to deal with any problems that arise following a game update (or indeed not to deal with those problems should they decide they don't want to).

On that note, I will leave you to discuss this with the mod's author, politely, in the relevant thread.
