Not if you've bought it through Steam. However, there are plenty of non-Steam versions around you can buy.

Have a great idea for the current or a future game? You can post it in the [L3+] Ideas forum.

I bought the game on disk when it first came out, now I find it has been transferred to steam. Now I find everytime when I press the icon to play the game it takes ages to upload the game before it downloads and sometimes steam doesn't respond when I try to go in to the programme. All I want to do when I first bought the game on disc is to play it. And just another point it has a habit of minimising itself whilst I'm playing.

"I find it has been transferred to steam" No that did not happen.
You may have used your disk version code to get a free Steam copy as well, but your disk version of the game will still be in its own Egosoft folder (\Program Files (x86)\EGOSOFT\X3 Terran Conflict probably) and quite separate from the Steam version in the SteamApps folder (unless you since deleted your disk version).
The only thing both copies will use are the saves, screenshots and profiles etc in your Documents folder.
That said, the two games should run exactly the same if fully updated and unmodded as they use the same versions of the gamefiles.

Thankyou for your reply, unfortunately due to a change of computer I lost all the previous Egosoft files. I tried to download it again from the original disc but it isn't compatible. I just wish that when Egosoft bought out a new game that they would offer it on either disc or to download it on Steam.
I bought Light of Heart for XRebirth and it took me all morning to pay for it. I can understand that Steam are concious of security but this was ridiculous. I tried to get into Steam Support but I found it impossible.
By the way I tried to find the Egosoft file using the link that you provided, but I didn't have any luck.

Your report is rather confusing. If you have your game registered on Steam, then you can just install Steam, login with your account and download the game again. There are no restrictions whatsoever anymore on the amount of times you do that. Once you have done that, you can play the game without having to download or upload anything on each gamestart.
Alternative, if you have a pure disc version of X3TC (i.e. one that is not bound to Steam), you can install it just as normal to your HDD and you can play it without the need for Steam to be installed.

"I tried to download it again from the original disc but it isn't compatible."
Sorry, but you are rather imprecise again. The game is indeed compatible with newer OSs (as vast numbers here will tell you) but you must properly and fully patch it right up to the latest version using the Egosoft patch downloads section before any attempt to play the game. That way the old XP DRM drivers that will indeed crash on newer OSs will never be loaded.
