Fell Affliction - Less than 1 FPS?

Post by VeggyZ »

I'm giving Rebirth another try now that it's been a while after release. I'm enjoying it a lot more than I did when I first bought it, however there's one kinda big and potentially game breaking problem that I can't seem to figure out, so I was wondering if anyone might have a tweak that could ease the problem at least... I've seen Fell Affliction discussed in these forums, but it doesn't look like anyone's game has become completely unplayable like mine does... so first

Some specs for you...

OS: Windows 7 64-bit
MB: Asus X99 Pro
GPU: Geforce GTX 780
CPU: Intel Core i7 5930k 3.5ghz
RAM: 16GB DDR4 (ADATA)

The game runs beautifully 99% of the time. Having a blast. Until I enter Fell Affliction. I go from solid 40-60 FPS at Maximum settings to ... 1 FPS. Actually, I can't even tell you the number, because I see a single frame of movement every 15 to 20 seconds. It's that slow on the highway and once I exit as well - it stays this way for a very long distance. It took minutes of me trying to maneuver enough to even see what could be causing the lag, only to find out there's a massive minefield...

I've tried a mod or two to remove this minefield in hopes that it will make my performance even remotely playable but so far they don't seem to actually remove it as of 3.53... I have turned my settings to the lowest possible, even sub 720p resolutions, which can improve it to a literal 1 full frame per second.

I don't know if there's anything important to do in that sector, but I can't even get close to it... does anyone have any insight into why this specific area is too much for my PC to handle, yet people with lower specs can somehow manage to at least maneuver to fire at the mines? I can't manage that, not in minutes of trying to position the ship.

Any tweaks or obscure mods that might actually work? I really love the X series and finally am starting to enjoy Rebirth... but this will stop me from being able to play the game completely if there's anything that has to be done in that sector, at all - ever.... suggestions very much appreciated, because even if there isn't anything I need to do there, it's borderline game-breaking to not even be able to pass by it without having the equivalent of .07 frames per second. :(

Thanks for any help you guys might be able to give me here..

Cannot help with the performance but nothing important to do in that sector, there is the minefield and a small way station for Reivers, can be safely ignored, lets hope someone can help you with the frame rate issue.

It may help if you provide a full Dxdiag and a copy of your savegame for support to check.

When "The Drop" occur, try to alt-tab to desktop and come back. This could make crash the game, save your game before.
If it stills, save, quit the game and retry once.
If it stands still, it's not "The Drop" then you have another problem...

Try this: when you get the slideshow see if you can boost (Tab) out of the zone into empty space and then see if the issue gores away. If it does then see if you can re-enter the zone OK.

I'm interested to see if that general slideshow issue workaround helps in this case. (Uncontrolled direction boosting in a minefield anyone? :D )

Yes and no.

Heh, I have actually tried that, it's how I initially escaped. Once I'm far enough away from the zone, the game is back to it's normal speed. However, re-entering at any speed causes a slideshow almost instantly once I cross that invisible boundary.

Thanks, it's good to hear I don't really have to pass through that zone. I can see that I can avoid it's highways easily enough so that's what I'll have to do for the time being, though I'd love to go fight that station, I can do without. Now I seem to have another strange problem... a really strange one in a new savegame, but that should probably be another thread..!

Edit: in that new savegame, I seem to be experiencing a bit better performance this time around, despite still using those mods. Newgame + mods from start I suppose...? I would like to reach fell affliction and see if there's any difference, but with my new issue, I do not think I'll bother making it that far until I can install an engine...

Try using a mining laser on any rock you can see. Asteroid explosions tend to revert back my "dips" another thing that works for me besides what was suggested already is to see some cinematic type thing, crew coming/going.

Since I don't have the savegame I was using and I'm not that far again due to a different bug of not being able to install engines in the skunk after saving/loading... I think I'm going to use a "cheat" mod to just get the MK5 engine at the start or make it purchasable, or something at least, so I can just get on with the game... Mk1 engine through the entire game is not ok with me...

I'll update this post when I can try that as to whether it made a difference or not. It's definitely tough to even look at an asteroid, with how bad the slideshow is, though, that'll be rough to get to it... we'll see.
