Steam in-game overlay not working

I've just started playing X Rebirth and noticed that I can't get into the Steam overlay from in-game. It it accessible during the Egosoft intro video, but shows with a very bright background behind the text. Here are two screenshots with default Steam skin and Steam Air Classic. After the intro, during the loading splash screen, I can bring up the overlay just fine, but during the main menu and rest of the game, it just shows a Windows cursor with no overlay elements, making me unable to click anything until I close it with a keyboard shortcut.

I'm playing on borderless windowed because X Rebirth, just like the X3 games, ignores my Nvidia color profile and displays with ugly default colors if being played in fullscreen mode, but I get the same overlay problem even there, regardless of the graphics options. Tried both default and beta branch, no difference, and no mods ofc.

Long shot, but is your Steam client up to date? You can check for updates to the client in the Steam menu of the client.

I always update my Steam client whenever I get the update notification, yes it is up to date

With X3 games, some Steam Overlay issues were found to be down to UAC interfering. One solution there was to make sure you were running the game using 'run as Admin' in an Admin user account. Another very long shot though as you had the overlay working in the game intro.

My UAC is set to always off and I am logged as an administrator (at least within Windows 8's strict limits). Tried running it as admin, but noticed no difference.

Just tested the new update, the problem appears to still persist. Am I rally the only one who can't use the Steam overlay in the game?
