Joystick setup for X3

I've just received a Saitek x55 for christmas. I want it for space sims, and so far I have managed to get it working for Elite Dangerous. With X3AP however, a few problems occur.

Firstly, I am given a choice on the startup screen to choose either the throttle or the joystick. It won't recognise both. I can't configure any buttons on the throttle unit to any commands in game - the game doesn't know that the throttle is connected when I choose the stick as the input device, and vice versa.

Secondly, the keyboard and joystick controls become ultra-sensitive, and one press will move a menu selection four or five times, making it difficult to navigate.

I've messed around with programming profiles but I don't even know how to apply a profile to X3, so promptly stopped wasting my time.
(EDIT: I've watched a youtube tutorial on programming the keys with the default software for the x55, and I can configure controls for whichever input device I choose, but again not for the other one - the game doesn't recognise it).

Teragon posted a solution that is currently half way down the page. Have a look at that. Uses ppjoy to make it work.
