Blue Screen Of Death (2.50)

Post by illusive_pimpernel »

Hi guys, I'm a long time forum go-er, first time poster. So I bought X -Rebirth at launch last year. I've had my share of bugs throughout all the different versions but nothing that every crashed the game or was otherwise serious. So I started playing X-rebirth again a couple of days ago when the latest patch came out (2.50) a free play game and I've spent about 6 hours playing. I have had two Blue screens of death in the past two days while playing the game.

The blue screen occurs when im in combat. The game freezes for about 2 seconds then goes immediately to the blue screen of death and starts making that horrible noise like the computer is choking up. Then the computer re-boots. After typing in my password this error message shows:

Have you verified the Steam gamefiles cache for X Rebirth since the last update?

You have a very old generic Microsoft sound driver while you have an Analogue Devices (SoundMax?) audio chipset on your motherboard. See if you can identify the correct sound device manufacturer from your system or motherboard documentation and get the latest Win7 x64 sound driver from the chipset manufacturer's site.

If all else fails then try your PC/laptop manufacturer's driver update site for a correct sound driver. Do not rely on Windows Update to keep your drivers up to date!

Can you also post the actual Blue Screen message and advice rather than the later Windows error message. If your system is rebooting too quickly to write down the BSOD message then see this FAQ.

Ah. Thanks for the quick reply buddy. I've just verified the integrity of game cache twice. Both times all files successfully validated. How would I check the type of sound driver I currently have\ what I currently need? Also i'm playing on a desktop a have never had this problem in previous versions of the game. The blue screen occurred once while in combat and another time while trying to board a ship. Both crashes occurred within the last two days (since the update).

Don't worry about the poor sound driver you have now, instead find out the maker of the sound chipset on your motherboard (I gave where to look above - system/mobo documentation or system maker website details of your system) and then look on the sound chipset maker's site for a sound driver for Win7 x64, or your system makers update site if nothing else is available. In your case your sound chipset is either by Analogue Devices or SoundMax but I am unsure which or if they are equivalents.

Have you prepared your system to get the blue screen info for if you get another BSOD?

Ok. I just finished downloading the latest sound driver for my motherboard (Asus p5b) from their official website. It was soundmax 6.10 beta, but after I installed it my speakers stopped working! Luckily I had a major update yesterday so was able to do system restore to last night and now the speakers are working again. Ill try to capture the bluescreen via the method you directed me too but it might take a few hours of play before I can replicate it. Ill post back as soon as possible. Thanks for the quick reply again

Ok Alan. I put myself in the exact same position in the game. I had just saved next to a capital ship before trying to board it yesterday so the conditions were exactly the same. So I get round to the part where im trying to blow up the ship component inside the docking bay after I have launched my marines. I fly pretty close to the docking bay to the point where I am almost inside it and blow up the component. Just as yesterday the game froze when the components health bar reached zero and exploded. But instead of going to a blue screen like the previous two times it just froze for about two minutes and then went back to desktop, only it wasn't the desktop - there were no desktop icons and the start menu was completely blank, I had to do a hard restart from the unresponsive and empty desktop. Man this is really screwing up my system. I never experienced these problems before with this game. This has to be the most unstable version of rebirth yet, at least for me. I know its the same problem as yesterday though as the event viewer shows the same critical event 'Source - kernel power, event id - 41, task category - 63'. Would you suggest trying to replicate the bluescreen again?

Just to put something straight here, the problems you are experiencing are not caused by the game being "unstable".

Bluescreen errors and major system lockups are pretty much impossible for a game to be the direct cause of; they are invariably caused by driver or hardware issues, but sometimes look like they are caused by a particular game because that game happens to be the application that exposes them. They might be caused by driver faults in features that only that game uses, or hardware problems that only come up when that hardware is stressed by a particular game in a particular way.

The above is why the bluescreen messages and the like are so important as they may give clues as to which part of your system is actually causing the error. Incidentally the event viewer error message in this case is not particularly useful; it's recording the fact that you did a hard reset, not whatever caused the lockup that resulted in you doing so. There might be some error log entries shortly before that that could give more clues.

Edit: Typo.

Hmm, have a look at Scenariol 3 in this. You *could* have a hardware issue under stress such as cpu overheating or psu low voltage.

EDIT: Sorry, I overlapped with CBJ in replying. Maybe Scenario 2 is more relevant then. That said, an explosion effect could also be exposing an issue with your graphics or sound driver.

Your right CBJ. However, all I was pointing out is that this version of rebirth is particularly unstable in comparison to previous versions on my machine. I never had these problems in the previous versions. Maybe something in the 2.50 update is now utilizing a faulty feature of some hardware or driver whereas it wasn't before? I will provide the other event messages immediately before and after:

In the same second as the critical kernel failure - 'Source - application popup, event id - 1060, task category - none, description - \system\root\syswow64\drivers\prodrv06.sys has been blocked from loading due to incompatibility with this system. Please contact your software vendor for a compatible version of the driver

and

In the second after the critical kernel failure - 'Source - kernel-eventtracing, event id - 3, task category - session, description - session "Microsoft security client OOBE" stopped due to the following error: 0xC000000D

Interesting Alan. But scenario 3 as listed indicated a 'random' restart but my system is not doing it randomly it only does it when playing rebirth and in heavy combat.

Edit: And I do not believe that scenario two would apply either, but what do I know? That's why I'm asking you guys.

I can definitely confirm I used to get BSOD when playing games until I upgraded my PSU - as my graphics card wasn't getting enought power!!

A good route to go down is to make sure your computer isn't restarting when a BSOD occurs, so you can write down the error code. It will usually look something like 0x0000000 with other numbers at the end or whatnot.

Also take note of the actual message given as the error, and then you can google the error and put the error code in too, and that can sometimes lead you in the right direction of the cause of the issue.

I can vouch though, I've had no BSOD whilst playing the game, so it does sound like a hardware issue somewhere along the line.

A reasonable explanation, but unlikely in this particular instance because other people are not experiencing the same problem. The exception might be your sound drivers, as Alan already mentioned.

This appears to be a Starforce driver. It's not part of XR, so it would have to be associated with another game you have installed. It's possible this could cause problems, especially as it's not a version that's compatible with your version of Windows, so you might want to use the Starforce removal tool supplied by Starforce to uninstall it. The error immediately after it could be related.

This would tend to support the theory that it's a hardware issue. Whether it's heat, power or a memory fault will be trickier to track down.

Interesting error message .. prodrv06.sys is a Starforce DRM driver and has not been used in X games since X2 The Threat. Are you playing other Starforce-protected games in between Rebirth sessions? See this thread.

EDIT: I must stop cross-posting with CBJ :D

Ok ok. This is the first I've ever heard of 'starforce driver' so I looked it up. Apparently some of my games use this such as Cossack European wars and perhaps some others? I have got a copy of x2 installed aswell. Are you guys sure it's a 'starforce driver' ? because I will delete it in a second if it's getting in the way of rebirth. But surely there must be others who have x2 the threat and rebirth installed on their machines but I appear the only one affected in such a way. And how come this starforce driver never caused a problem in previous versions of rebirth and why is it doing it now, if it is indeed the problem.

Edit: Also why would this starforce thingy affect x rebirth in such a way. The bluescreen occurs when in heavy combat or being close to an explosion yet the problem is caused by this? There must be a link between the system being stressed and this 'DRM' driver somehow interfering with the continuity of the game. Interesting. Any thoughts or solutions?

All the sources I've been able to find have listed it as a Staforce driver. Using the Starforce removal tool rather than deleting it manually would be the safest way to get rid of it, because it won't accidentally remove anything else and shouldn't leave behind any dependency problems.

With regard to your question about why it suddenly causes problems with the latest version, it is indeed relatively unlikely, but in the same way that the new version might expose problems with other drivers it could do so with these. Hardware or sound driver issues do seem a more likely explanation, though.

Ok so I downloaded the starforce removal tool and ran it. It said there was no protection to remove? How do it delete this thing manually then?

Edit: Ok so I removed the thing manually. It was still there even though the official remover said it wasn't. Fingers crossed.

Ok so I removed the offending starforce drm file and ran the game again. Same save, same scenario, trying to board a cap ship. Did the exact same thing as before released the pods and started blowing up the components of the ship. When I got to destroying the component in the docking bay it crashed again. But this time there was no blue screen. it simply froze and the sound of my laser firing just kept repeating it self. Crtl-alt-del-ed out and it said x rebirth was not responding. The got the error message:

So now, in the exact same situation in the game, i'm suffering from an apphangb1 which is apparently caused by corrupt system files from what I can learn from other websites. Any help?

As an elimination test, go into Control Panel, Device Manager, Sound/Audio Devices and disable all your *sound* devices and their driver(s) (right-click on a device to get a disable/enable pop-up menu). Now play the game from your save without sound but using subtitles. See if you get the same issue (it is not your sound driver at fault) or get past the problem area (it is your sound driver).

We can see where to go next after the results of that.

Ok. So I disabled all the sound drivers in the device manager (there was about 6 of them). Anyway I fired up rebirth and loaded my save just like you suggested and played the same scenario without sound. I managed to procure the blue screen of death again while I was whizzing through all the fire effects coming of the beat up cap ship. Great, so we've eliminated the possibility that the sound drivers are to blame. Or perhaps not so great. The blue screen gave me little more information than the event message that I originally posted first.

But in any case here is what the bluescreen said exactly:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

A process or thread crucial to system operation has unexpectedly exited or been terminated

If this is the first time this has happened contact.... blah blah blah

Technical information:

*** Stop: 0x000000F4 (0x0000000000000003, 0xFFFFFA8007E24B30, 0xFFFFFA8007E24E10, 0xFFFFF8000033D6270)

Collecting data for crash dump
Dumping physical memory into disk:100

End of blue screen\ Obviously I omitted the jargon where it tells you check all hardware and contact Microsoft support. But the technical information is the same information that I provided in my original post in the error message? What does it mean?

I did a little googling on this issue and a few places suggest SATA driver might be the cause. Have you checked if there is an updated driver for the controller the drive that hold Rebirth is connected to?

Scoob.
