Hey all, its a long shot, but I was hoping someone with similar hardware could answer...
I have a pretty lame, Acer 5740 laptop, 1st gen i5, 2.26ghz, 4gb ram, THE most awful 15.6" screen I've ever seen, and one of these graphics cards:
Discrete ATI Radeon™ HD 5650 graphics
Discrete ATI Radeon™ HD 5470 graphics
Can't seem to get any more info from my laptop other than HD 5000 series.
Anyway, x3 ap runs pretty well on it, on average settings @ 1336x 768. Feels like I get a good 50~fps, drops to 25 in crazy sectors.
But how do you think x rebirth would do?
I haven't brought it yet because of this. And there aren't any demos so I'm quite stumped!
Thanks!

The laptop is at minimum necessary specs for Rebirth in nearly all departments. A 2.26-GHz Intel Core i5-430M cpu has only 2 real cores (4 threads). The game is recommended to run on 4 real cores at 2.5+ GHz and to have more than 4 GB RAM accessed via a 64 bit Operating System.
Your laptop may just about run the game but it will be at all minimal settings and it is even then unlikely to play very well at the times in-game that you would most want it to.

I thought as much! Thanks...
Looks like I need a new laptop eventually!
Need a nicer screen too. Can't see mine from any angle, or if its bright, or dark... Lol

i just bought a new laptop for that game and so im playing at really minimum
Lenovo G505s
A-10 5750m at 3.2 ghz quad-core
8GB ram
AMD radeon 8650G+8570M
win 8.1 Pro 64 bit OP
sometimes even Baerly run the game(20-25FPS but smooth) coz the overheat so if u listen to me
Don't buy AMD for that game choose instead NVidia+Intel Combo
like an I7+gt850m ram not expensive so even if they gave u 4GB ram usally 2 slot on Motherboard just buy two 8GB moudule aroun 150GBP all togheter and so game gonna run around 40-50FPS

I'd echo laptops being much worse than a desktop. Unless you rely heavily upon mobility of your laptop I'd recommend a desktop.
You'll get a far far far superior desktop for far less money, than an average gaming laptop. You'll be able to upgrade as and when required, rather than waiting for a huge outlay to buy yet another laptop.#
Of course if you must have a laptop, then it may be worth (if you can bear it) waiting a few months. Xmas sales... often electronics are discounted

I have a desktop already. Its pretty old now, but it still has no trouble in most games. That's running an intel core 2 quad @ 2.5ghz, 8gb ddr2, and a amd radeon 6870.
Unfortunately, can't take that to work* with me!
The laptop I want is a custom built one, but basically, an i7 quad core, 8gb ram, a geforce gfx 860m, and a 13" full HD IPS screen. They also do it in a qhd resolution, but I don't really need that higher res on such a small screen. It costs around ~£700
*Work involves me, sitting in a van, waiting for customers to collect their shopping, for 9 hours a day! And most days, I don't get that many... Lol

Depends on what laptop you get.
Before considering any mobile videocard, check what notebookcheck (or some site like that) has to say on it. In my 8740w I have an m7820 = hd5870m = underclocked hd5770, for example. That way you can start gauging some performance already. Also check that the laptop that you're getting doesn't throttle down due to temperatures (cough rMBP cough, plus 123512312 other laptops).
Mobile CPUs... Not too far off the desktops nowadays
And yes - if you don't need the mobility, get a desktop. Mini-ITX machines are incredibly small nowadays (think 2-3 14'' thinkpads stacked), and pack so much bang it's not even funny (anything that's not x99 goes, in general). I got my laptop because 1) 16:10 17'' IPS ^_^ and 2) I want to be able to move at a moment's notice in/out the country (student, renting, etc). Technically, you could bolt on a laptop screen onto a mITX solution if you wanted to make it really portable, assuming that you get something that can control it.
As for AMD for games - last time I checked their GPUs were quite fine. CPU... another story at the moment (depends on what you need). And then we have the nvidia 9-series... Let's say you've got some research to do

Just make sure you've got a plug in power source; battery won't last more then a couple hours.
Play around with the settings and find out what works.
If you can handle it, turn shadows to high and newer shadow rendering method.
It looks BEA-UUUUTIFUL.
