What CPU to get?

Post by Ricemanu »

Hey guys,
I wanted to upgrade my CPU to accomodate X and get more performance for work related stuff. Right now im running an AMD Phenom X4 965 BE. I was thinking about getting an i7-4790 based on reviews. My GPU is a GTX770, can anybody give me feedback on their specs (bonus points for having a GTX770+i7-4790). Running it on 12gb RAM atm.

In one of the promovids Ego talked about more cores=more performance, can anybody shed some light on that situation? Looking forward to your insightful comments guys.

You won't see big performance gains in X-rebirth from I7 compared to I5. But I would still recommend getting that I7. Modern games are slowly getting better and better with multithreading. Especially now when Mantle (and hopefully DX12) are showing improvements on that area (finally).

Generally you will be GPU bound in most games (most of the time) you play with that combo, especially on higher resolutions.

GPU bound sounds fantastic for a game where it doesn't matter much for my frames if i play on ultra or low settings!

I'm no expert on hardware, but as XR is very cpu heavy then the fastest possible is the key. At least with the 64bit client load balancing to each core looks pretty good on my box so 4+ cores is a must obviously. Any reasonably modern gfx card will be ok, my 550ti is very stretched and cant go over 4x aa due to low gfx memory (1gb on my card) but mostly the framerate seems to be limited by the cpu and total npc activity in game, not just in current zone as seen when installing World War X mod. The extra spawns reduce my average fps from 30 to 15-18 even in zones with only a few npcs with me.

The best CPU for the money in gaming now would be Core i5-4590, no need for the i7 series...

Which 4790? The one without a letter? The i7-4700 serie.
There is also E3-1200 v3 serie with similar specs.

12 GiB RAM you say. That is not a multiple of 2. :?

Yes, the one without the letter. i7-4790.
12 gig because i upgraded it once with another 8 gig, up from 4. Seems to work, altough i know its cobbled together haphazardly.

It's not just purely for gaming, and is it really the best for X, Borgore? That#s why i've opened this thread, to get some data out of guys with powerful CPUs and maybe my graphics card :D

Fair bit cheaper then the i7's but not nearly as powerful, great if you're upgrading on a budget, it's a lot cheaper and should be a good upgrade over that AMD, especially if you're not looking to build a massive gaming rig.

CPU Mark Scores

Intel Core i7-4790K @ 4.00GHz
11,444

Intel Xeon E3-1246 v3 @ 3.50GHz
10,276

Intel Core i7-4790 @ 3.60GHz
10,237

Intel Core i5-4590 @ 3.30GHz
7,316

AMD Phenom II X4 965
4,271

Personally I'd buy the 4790k (Partly because I already planned on doing so myself, if I can talk myself into spending the money lol), it's only $25 more ($339.99) then the 4790 ($314.99) on Newegg. The Xeon is $284.00 but I've no experience using one.

Edit: Might mention I haven't yet decided to buy Rebirth, so I cant really vouch for the kind of performance you might see in it. But I play other CPU intense games, not just X, so that's why I'm probably biased towards the i7.

E3-1241 is $273. It differs from E3-1246 by not having integrated graphics (and thus 80W vs 84W of 1246 and 4790). Does one need that integrated with GTX770?

The Xeon do not differ much from i7 in practice.

According to various forum posts, X:R does not necessarily get faster with a better GPU. Or with a better CPU for that matter. There seem to be some weird and semi-random issues with parts of the performance lost to idling.

X3 tends to be CPU bound, especially if you already have a fast card like the GTX770, but it will profit from a better performance per core. Intel rules in performance per core, so if you want to speed up X3, go for some Intel CPU.

Graphics wise I'd keep that GTX770, unless you need an upgrade for other games/applications. X3 does not need it and for X:R it is questionable if changing it will improve things.

The 12 GByte of RAM are plenty either way.

I think CPU is important for FPS in x r.
I have I5 3350p 3.1-3.3 ghz, and im change hd 6970 for r9 290 and i get just litle boost on fps, so i think CPU must be bottelneck in my case.

Setings: low, 1080p 40-50 fps

I've just upgraded to an i5-4690k and put a Coolermaster 212 Evo cooler on it and have it overclocked to 4Ghz. Works like a charm and no game I've played on it yet has struggled due to CPU (Dark Souls 2, World of Tanks, XCOM:EW, Minecraft). Definitely recommend. Amazon has it for £184 (link)

I have an i7-3770k @ 3.5 ghz and geforce 760 gtx+ superclocked and x rebirth still lags at times. Metro last light also lags.
