In normal campaign mode there is no option for me to build the URV forge. There are 3 stations available, energy, water and something else but no URV forge.
Ditched that after restarting again only to have the same problem.
Started again but this time as a mercenary set to hard option. The game constantly crashes during the 1st mission while escorting the freighter. It always crashes when following it into one of the lanes.
I reckon this game might be playable by about version 5.

Its the imperfections in people that make them perfect.
If it warn't for bad luck I'd have none at all.

from the moment that u boarded the prison ship and was heading back to the gate to jump into devries u got your ships back…. including a "special" construction vessel.
this construction vessel is the only one that is capable of building the integrative urv forge.
if u sold it or made it go poof u have a problem..
another thing is that if u buy / build a construction vessel in devries u will be limited to the stations u have mentioned in your post. as far as i know this is intended.
One workaround is to change the saved File.
U should now be able to build all the albion stations EXCEPT for the intergrative urv forge
To get this to work u build another devries construction vessel add full crew. and we are going to edit the savedgame file again.
do this correct and your golden and will be able to continue the campaign.
---NOTE--- Failure to backup your save before Editing is at your own risk!! U CAN BREAK UR SAVE ---NOTE---

* First write down the name of your architect of the construction vessel
* Save the game and make a Backup so that u can replace the the file incase of u breaking the save.
* find the save in your documents - eggosoft - x rebirth - ****** - Save
* Open it with notepad
* Search for your architect so that ur sure that u have the correct construction vessel
* Once u have found it the next line your looking for is further up in the file…. Look for the following : <component class="buildmodule" macro="buildmodule_stations_devries_macro"
*once u have found it replace it with : <component class="buildmodule" macro="buildmodule_stations_albion_macro"
* Save the file and ur good to go

v2.1
It doesn't matter what you do! Cure 1 problem and 20 more rear there ugly heads.
Gave up on the plot so set off on free play with the XRSGE savegame editor to hand knowing I would need it but came across loads of problems..
To mention a few:
* Freighters just go back and forth through gates, they go through a gate turn around and go back through it again, infinately! Not just NPC's but my own too.
* Freighters dock at stations to trade, but just sit there doing nothing.
* Freighters sit in the sector and ignore trades you set up for them through the trade software. This happens about 10% of the time only after several hours of gameplay.
* Spend hours and hours building a station. For what? It doesn't do or sell anything!
* Capture a small fighter and claim it with a pilot. You might as well just tell him to commit suicide and not bother getting into the cockpit. First sign of trouble he is dead.
* Things keep sticking so have to go out of zone and back in again to unstick it.
* Things keep sticking so have to command the ship to leave group, then join again to unstick it.
This game is CRAP!!!

Your problem with trade ships not trading when you set them to trade is quite new. I'm having this problem now on 64-bit occasionally aswell. Stations themselves work just fine, so dunno what your problem is with them.
I haven't had any problems with freighters getting stuck at tradeports in a long time. Nor do I have problems with them getting looping at gates either anymore. (Not saying these things can't happen).
Problem with captured small fighters is obivious, as you can't repair them. Which is a big drawback in the system, and needs to be addressed.
